Sweetness Under Your Scourge

The soul asks God for grace to adore providence and taste heavenly sweetness amid healing affliction.

Grant this, O my God! that I may silently adore the order of your providence over the course of my life—providence so worthy of adoration; that your scourge may console me; and that, having lived in the bitterness of my sins while I was at peace, I may taste the heavenly sweetness of your grace amid the healing afflictions with which you afflict me!1

Unless You Come With Grace

Hardened by the world, the heart confesses that no creaturely means can begin conversion, and cries only to God for what nature cannot give.

But I recognize, my God, that my heart is so hardened and so full of the world's ideas, cares, anxieties, and attachments that neither sickness nor health, nor discourses, nor books, nor your holy Scriptures, nor your Gospel, nor your most sacred mysteries, nor almsgiving, nor fasting, nor mortifications, nor miracles, nor the use of the sacraments, nor the sacrifice of your body, nor all my efforts, nor those of the whole world together, can do anything at all to begin my conversion, unless you accompany all these things with an entirely extraordinary help from your grace.2 That is why, my God, I turn to you, almighty God, to ask you for a gift that all creatures together cannot grant me. I would not dare cry out to you if anyone else could answer my cries. But, my God, since the conversion of my heart that I ask of you is a work that surpasses every effort of nature, I can turn only to the author and almighty master of nature and of my heart. To whom shall I cry out, Lord? To whom shall I turn for help, if not to you? Nothing that is not God can fulfill my expectation.3

Bind the Strong Man

Seeking God himself, the prayer asks the Lord to enter the rebellious heart, bind the mastering enemy, and reclaim its treasures.

It is God himself I ask for and seek, and it is to you alone, my God, that I turn in order to obtain you. Open my heart, Lord; enter this rebellious place that the vices have occupied. They keep it in subjection. Enter it as you would enter the house of the strong man; but first bind the strong and powerful enemy who masters it, and then take the treasures that are there.4

Stamp Your Image Again

The soul begs God to reclaim world-stolen affections and recreate the effaced baptismal image as Jesus Christ, the imprint of his being.

Lord, take my affections that the world had stolen; steal this treasure yourself — or rather, take it back, since it belongs to you, as a tribute I owe you, because your image is stamped upon it.5 You had formed it there, Lord, at the moment of my baptism, which is my second birth; but it is completely effaced. The idea of the world is so deeply engraved there that yours is no longer recognizable. You alone could create my soul; you alone can create it anew; you alone could form your image there; you alone can reform it and stamp your effaced portrait again — that is, Jesus Christ my Savior, who is your image and the imprint of your being,6

Mais je reconnois, mon Dieu, que mon cœur est tellement endurci et plein des idées, des soins, des inquiétudes et des attachemens du monde, que la maladie non plus que la santé, ni les discours, ni les livres, ni vos Écritures sacrées, ni votre Évangile, ni vos mystères les plus saints, ni les aumônes, ni les jeûnes, ni les mortifications, ni les miracles, ni l’usage des sacremens, ni le sacrifice de votre corps, ni tous mes efforts, ni ceux de tout le monde ensemble, ne peuvent rien du tout pour commencer ma conversion, si vous n’accompagnez toutes ces choses d’une assistance toute extraordinaire de votre grâce. C’est pourquoi, mon Dieu, je m’adresse à vous, Dieu tout-puissant, pour vous demander un don que toutes les créatures ensemble ne peuvent m’accorder. Je n’aurois pas la hardiesse de vous adresser mes cris, si quelque autre pouvoit les exaucer. Mais, mon Dieu, comme la conversion de mon cœur, que je vous demande, est un ouvrage qui passe tous les efforts de la nature, je ne puis m’adresser qu’à l’auteur et au maitre tout-puissant de la nature et de mon cœur. A qui crierai-je, Seigneur, à qui aurai-je recours, si ce n’est à vous ? Tout ce qui n’est pas Dieu ne peut pas remplir mon attente.

C’est Dieu même que je demande et que je cherche : et c’est a vous seul, mon Dieu, que je m’adresse pour vous obtenir. Ouvrez mon cœur, Seigneur ; entrez dans cette place rebelle que les vices ont occupée. Ils la tiennent sujette. Entrez-y comme dans la maison du tort ; mais liez auparavant le fort et puissant ennemi qui la maîtrise, et prenez ensuite les trésors qui y sont. Seigneur, prenez mes affections que le monde avoit volées ; volez vous-même ce trésor, ou plutôt reprenez-le, puisque c’est à vous qu’il appartient, comme un tribut que je vous dois, puisque votre image y est empreinte. Vous l’y aviez formée, Seigneur, au moment de mon baptême qui est ma seconde naissance : mais elle est toute effacée. L’idée du monde y est tellement gravée, que la vôtre n’est plus connoissable. Vous seul avez pu créer mon âme ; vous seul pouvez la créer de nouveau ; vous seul y avez pu former votre image, vous seul pouvez la réformer, et y réimprimer votre portrait effacé, c’est-à-dire Jésus-Christ mon Sauveur, qui est votre image et le caractère de votre substance,
