Before the God of Account

The soul addresses God as the One before whom every life will be weighed, who tests the elect, punishes sinners, and leaves the hardened to their worldly delight.

O God, before whom I must give an exact account of all my actions at the end of my life and at the end of the world! O God, who lets the world go on only to test your elect, or to punish sinners!1 O God, who leaves hardened sinners in their delicious and criminal use of the world!

Torn from What We Love

God is confessed as the One who ends bodily life and, at death’s hour, strips the soul of every cherished attachment.

O God, who causes our bodies to die, and who, at the hour of death, detaches our soul from everything it loved in the world! O God, who at that last moment of my life will tear me away from all the things I have clung to and on which I have set my heart!

Nothing Endures but You

On the last day God will consume creation and shatter every empty idol, proving that only the everlasting One is worthy of love.

O God, who on the last day will consume heaven and earth and all the creatures they hold, to show every human being that nothing endures but you, and thus that nothing is worthy of love but you, since nothing lasts but you!2 O God, who will destroy all these empty idols and all these deadly objects of our passions!

Illness as a Forestalling Mercy

The sick soul blesses God for already undoing, through weakness, the comforts and idols that will one day fall in wrath.

I praise you, my God, and I will bless you all the days of my life, because it has pleased you to forestall that dreadful day for my sake by destroying all things as they stand for me, in the weakness to which you have reduced me.34 I praise you, my God, and I will bless you all the days of my life, because it has pleased you to make me unable to enjoy the comforts of health and the pleasures of the world, and because you have, in a sense, destroyed for my good the deceitful idols that you will truly destroy for the confusion of the wicked on the day of your wrath.

Judge Myself Before You Judge

The prayer asks to treat present illness as a merciful death—stripped, alone before God—so self-examination may win mercy before the final sentence.

Grant, Lord, that I may judge myself after this destruction you have worked upon me, so that you yourself may not judge me after the total destruction you will make of my life and of the world.5 For, Lord, just as at the moment of my death I will find myself cut off from the world, stripped of everything, alone in your presence, to answer to your justice for every movement of my heart, grant that in this illness I may regard myself as in a kind of death—cut off from the world, stripped of every object of my attachments, alone in your presence—to beg from your mercy the conversion of my heart; and that I may thus take extreme comfort in this: that you are sending me now a kind of death in order to exercise your mercy, before you send me death in earnest in order to exercise your judgment. Grant therefore, O my God, that as you have forestalled my death, I may forestall the severity of your sentence, and that I may examine myself before your judgment, so that I may find mercy in your presence.6
