Preces Quotidianae

Faith in the Father, Lord, and Lamb

The believer declares trust in God as a merciful Father, a compassionate Lord, and in Christ as the Lamb of God who takes away sin.

I believe in you as Father—see! For you are Father, and we are children: as a father has mercy on his children, so you also have mercy on us, Lord.✦ I believe in you as Lord—see! For you are Lord and we are servants: our eyes look to you, our Lord, until you have mercy on us.✦ I believe that even if we are neither children nor servants, but only little dogs, still we would be allowed to eat from the crumbs that fall from your table.✦ I believe that Christ is the Lamb of God: Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world—John1 1.2 29.✦3

Faith in Christ the Savior and the Spirit

The believer petitions for the removal of sin, professes faith in Christ who came to save sinners and redeem the lost, and affirms the Spirit as the Lord and Giver of life.

Take mine away as well.4 I believe that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15).✦ 1. 15. You who came to save sinners, save me also—the first and greatest of sinners.✦ I believe that Christ came to redeem the lost; You who came to redeem the lost, don't let the one redeemed by You be lost. I believe that the Spirit is the Lord and Giver of life (Nicene Creed).5 Nicene.

Living in the Spirit's Grace

The believer prays to receive the soul and the Spirit's grace not in vain, trusting in the Sacraments.

You who gave me a living soul, grant that I may not receive my soul in vain. I believe that the Spirit imparts grace in His Sacraments. Grant me that I may not receive His grace in vain✦6

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Citation is split across s6–s8 as Joan. / i. / 29.; neighboring section continues the petition (tollas et mea).
  2. 2 ↩Citation fragment only (chapter numeral of Joan. i. 29 / John 1:29).
  3. 3 ↩Citation fragment only (verse numeral completing Joan. i. 29 / John 1:29).
  4. 4 ↩Fragment continues the preceding Agnus Dei petition (qui tollis peccata mundi); mea supplies my sins from that context.
  5. 5 ↩Source reads vitze; translated as vitae (of life), matching Nicene Creed language (Dominum et vivificantem / Lord and Giver of life).
  6. 6 ↩The Latin clause is cut at the section boundary before the finite verb; neighboring PrecesPriv.1.88.1 begins with recipiam (and cites 2 Cor. 6:1). 'Receive' is supplied for sense so the English remains readable.
