Preces Quotidianae

Intercession for the Church and Its Leaders

Prayers for bishops, clergy, and the institutions entrusted to the speaker.

Of Chichester; of the dioceses; of Ely, of this present one, namely1 Winchester.2 Of the clergy, of the people, of the helps, of the administrations, of the Deanery of the Chapel Royal, of the stewardship, namely3 Of the royal alms; of the colleges entrusted to me, as Visitor.4

Intercession for Personal Relationships

Prayers for friends, enemies, neighbors, and those with whom the speaker has mutual prayer obligations.

Moral friendship: those who wish me well, some of them even unknown to me. Christian charity: those who hate me without cause, or even for the sake of the truth, or of justice.5 Local neighborhood: those who live next to us without harm or trouble. Our promise: those whose mention I have promised to keep in my prayers. Mutual duty: those who keep me in mind in their prayers and claim the same of me in return.6

Intercession for the Needy and Hindered

Prayers for those who are burdened, neglected, or in crisis, including those who cannot pray and those with important work.

Because those overwhelmed by their responsibilities have no time to pray.7 Those who, for valid reasons, pray less often. For those who have no separate intercessor of their own to pray for them. For those who are currently in extreme need or struggling with a grave crisis. For those who have some notable work in hand,8

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Source forms Cicestriz, Dicceseon, and Eleopolis look OCR-corrupt; read as Cicestriae (Chichester), Dioeceseon (of the dioceses), and Eliopolis (Ely). The digit 4 before Eleopolis is treated as a misread mark (likely s./punctuation), not a numeral.
  2. 2 ↩Winton. is the conventional abbreviation for Wintonia / Winchester; with the preceding sc., it likely names the present see.
  3. 3 ↩Opitulationum rendered as helps (aid/assistance); Gubernationum as administrations (governance); Dispensationis as stewardship (household or alms-dispensing office). All are genitive headings in an intercession list.
  4. 4 ↩Eleemosynx Regi: corrected to Eleemosynae Regiae (royal alms / royal almonry).
  5. 5 ↩Chantas corrected to Charitas (charity).
  6. 6 ↩Source has 'eum mei'; most plausible intended sense is 'cum mei' or simply 'mei' with 'memoriam mei habere' ('to keep me in remembrance'). Translated for reciprocal intercession, not literal 'eum'.
  7. 7 ↩'Quod' + subjunctive 'vacet' can read as causal/explanatory ('because they have no free time to pray') or as a stated concern. Rendered causally, matching the mutual-duty category above.
  8. 8 ↩Source reads 'prz manibus'; treated as the common idiom 'prae manibus' ('at hand' / 'in hand').
