Preces Quotidianae

Prayer for the Universal Church

A prayer for the truth, unity, and stability of the Catholic Church and all churches worldwide, that love and truth may flourish.

For the Catholic Church, and for the churches throughout the world — namely, for their1 truth, unity, and stability.2 In all things, may love flourish and may truth live.

Prayer for the Local Church and Its Correction

A petition for the reformation of the local church, correction of errors, conversion of unbelievers, and removal of heresies and scandals.

For our Church: that what is lacking in her may be supplied, what is not right may be corrected, and that all heresies, schisms, and scandals, both public and private, may be removed.3 Correct those who go astray; convert the unbelieving; increase the Church's faith; destroy heresies; expose the crafty; crush violent enemies.4

Prayer for Clergy and Laity

A prayer that clergy may rightly divide the word and walk uprightly, and that the laity may be teachable and respectful of authority.

For the clergy: that they may rightly divide the word, that they may walk with a straight step, that while teaching others they themselves may learn to cut the word straight; for the people: that they may not be wiser than they ought, but may be persuaded by reason, and yield to the authority of their superiors.56

Prayer for Civil and Local Authorities

A prayer for the stability and peace of commonwealths, the kingdom, and the municipality.

For the commonwealths: for their stability and7 peace. For the Kingdom,8 For the municipality,9

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Reading Ecclesus as Ecclesiis (churches) and sc. as scilicet (namely); the phrase continues into the next sentence.
  2. 2 ↩Reading stabihtate as stabilitate.
  3. 3 ↩Reading Hzereses as Haereses. qui…desunt / qui non recta may intend quae (things lacking / things not right) rather than persons; sense taken as supplying deficiencies and correcting what is amiss.
  4. 4 ↩Corrections: Ineredulos→Incredulos; Ecclesi: fidem→Ecclesiae fidem; Hszereses→Haereses; Hostes ᾧ : violentos→Hostes violentos (Greek bleed-through discarded).
  5. 5 ↩recte secent taken as seco, 'cut/divide rightly' (cf. same work: Ut recte dividant verbum veritatis… recto pede incedant). Garbled opÜorouetv read as Greek ὀρθοτομεῖν. Junk tokens es / extra punctuation ignored.
  6. 6 ↩Object of secent and ὀρθοτομεῖν is not explicit in this line; 'the word' is supplied from 2 Tim 2:15 sense and the parallel clerical petition elsewhere in this text.
  7. 7 ↩Reading Pohtis as Politiis (commonwealths/states); phrase continues with pace in s8.
  8. 8 ↩pace completes earum from s7 (earum pace); the petition list continues in the next section (Municipio).
  9. 9 ↩Municipio is the ablative/dative of municipium (borough, corporate town). Read as a brief intercession heading in parallel with neighboring Pro Regno and Urbe nostra; the governing Pro is supplied by context, not restated in this fragment.
