Preces Quotidianae

Because of Your Mercies

The prayer opens by acknowledging God's surpassing abundance of mercies and addressing Him directly as the source of all mercy.

Because of the surpassing abundance of mercies1 Yours.

Cries for Mercy and Grace

A series of scriptural petitions and responses calling upon God's mercy, grace, and love to overcome sin, culminating in a humble 'Yes, Lord.'

Because of the great love with which you have loved us, Eph.✦2 2.✦3 4.✦4 Be merciful to me, a sinner. Luke.5 18.6 18.✦ Be merciful to me, the most wretched of sinners.7 Deep calls to deep, Psalm 42.8 7. The abyss of our misery calls upon the abyss of Your mercy.9 Where sin has abounded, may grace abound still more; Rom.✦ v. 20. Overcome our evil with Your good; Rom.✦10 xi.✦11 21. May Your mercy rise above Your justice, Jas.✦12 ii. 18. in our sins. Yes, Lord.

Confession of Faith and Final Appeal

The prayer concludes with a confession of Christ as the Son of God, a plea for salvation as the chief of sinners, and an appeal from the throne of justice to the throne of grace.

But above all things, and before all things, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.13 You who came into the world to save sinners, 1 Tim. i. 15. Of whom I am the first: save me. You who take away the sins of the world, take away my sins; You who came to redeem the lost, Luke xix. 10. Don't let the one You redeemed be lost.✦ From the remembrance of evils: that I may not recall those things I saw or heard from the wicked in the world, nor ever tell them to others; that I may hate every unjust way.14 I have deserved death, but still I appeal from the throne of Your justice to the throne of Your grace.✦15

  4. ↩Luke.18.13 — But the tax collector, standing far off, was not even willing to lift his eyes to heaven, but kept beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner.'
  5. ↩Rom.5.20 — The law came in alongside so that the trespass might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.
  6. ↩Rom.12.21 — Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Incomplete prepositional phrase; neighboring next section supplies Tuarum (“Your”), so the full line likely reads “Because of the surpassing abundance of Your mercies.”
  2. 2 ↩Trailing 'EpA.' is treated as a compressed biblical book tag (Ephesians / Epistola ad Ephesios), not as prose; rendered 'Eph.' to match the citation pattern of the following chapter and verse fragments.
  3. 3 ↩Roman numeral 'ii.' is a chapter citation fragment (with s1 'EpA.' and s3 '4.'), not independent prose; rendered as Arabic 2.
  4. 4 ↩Verse numeral belonging to the EpA. ii. 4 citation cluster; preserved as 4.
  5. 5 ↩Source abbreviation "Lwce." is treated as corrupt for Lucae (Luke).
  6. 6 ↩Source "xviu." is read as Roman numeral xviii (18), likely a citation chapter number.
  7. 7 ↩Unintelligible span "E ELT" is treated as OCR garbage between peccatorum and miserrimo; sense is taken as peccatorum miserrimo (most wretched of sinners).
  8. 8 ↩Source citation 'Psal xlu' looks corrupt (likely OCR/typesetting for Vulgate Ps. xli / English Ps. 42). Translated the quotation; left the citation surface as printed pending resolution.
  9. 9 ↩Normalized from early/orthographic Latin (miserie/nostre/misericordie) and the likely truncation tus → tuae; verb invocat is not written here but is implied by the preceding psalm line Abyssus abyssum invocat and by the nominative–accusative frame.
  10. 10 ↩Source citation reads 'Aom.'; treated as corrupt OCR for 'Rom.' (Romans), matching the Rom 12:21 pattern of the petition and the following xi./21. markers.
  11. 11 ↩If this completes a Romans 12:21 citation with the following '21.', the expected Roman numeral is xii (12), not xi (11); possible OCR loss of one 'i'.
  12. 12 ↩Latin has justitiam (justice/righteousness), not judicium (judgment) as in James 2:13 Vulgate; rendered as justice to stay faithful to this text while noting the James echo.
  13. 13 ↩Source reads 'Το es'; most plausible intended reading is 'Tu es' (You are).
  14. 14 ↩Normalized corrupted forms for sense: szculo → saeculo (in the world/age); alis → aliis (to others). eorum, qui vidi is taken as eorum quae vidi (those things I saw), not persons.
  15. 15 ↩Normalized corrupted forms: justitize 'Tuze → justitiae Tuae; gratie Tus → gratiae Tuae. appello a... ad is legal-devotional 'appeal from... to...'.
