A Plea for Mercy and Cleansing
The petitioner acknowledges God's grace and asks for forgiveness for the sins of the day.
What can I offer You, or what can I give You in return, most generous and immortal King, compassionate Lord who loves humanity? Even though I’ve been slow to please You and have done nothing good, You’ve brought me to the end of this day, providing for the conversion and salvation of my soul. Be merciful to me, a sinner stripped of every good work. Raise up my fallen soul, defiled by countless sins, and take from me every evil thought belonging to this visible life. You alone are without sin: forgive the sins I committed against You today, knowingly and unknowingly, in word, deed, and thought, and through all my senses. Shelter me Yourself, and preserve me from every hostile attack by Your divine authority, Your indescribable love for humanity, and Your power. Cleanse me, O God; cleanse me from the multitude of my sins.
Prayer for Protection and Peace
A request for divine light, protection from evil, and the guidance of a guardian angel during sleep.
Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me from the evil one’s snare and save my passion-ridden soul. Overshadow me with the light of Your face when You come in glory. Let me now fall asleep without condemnation or troubling dreams; keep Your servant’s mind undisturbed, drive every work of Satan far from me, and enlighten the spiritual eyes of my heart, so that I don't sleep the sleep of death.1 And send me an angel of peace to guard and guide my soul and body, so that he may deliver me from my enemies and, when I rise from my bed, I may offer You prayers of thanksgiving.
Intercession and Final Doxology
The prayer concludes by seeking the intercession of the Mother of God and the saints, ending in a doxology.
Yes, O Lord, hear me, Your sinful and wretched servant, and give me the will and a clear conscience to study Your words when I rise. Through Your angels, drive demonic despondency far from me, so that I may bless Your holy name and glorify and praise Mary, the most pure Mother of God, whom You have given to us sinners as our intercessor. Receive her as she prays for us, for I know that she reflects Your love for humanity and never ceases to pray.23 Through her intercession, through the sign of the precious Cross, and for the sake of all your saints, preserve my poor soul, Jesus Christ our God, for you are holy and exceedingly glorious forever. Что Ти принесу́, или́ что Ти возда́м, великодарови́тый Безсме́ртный Царю́, ще́дре и человеколю́бче Го́споди, я́ко леня́щася мене́ на Твое́ угожде́ние, и ничто́же бла́го сотво́рша, приве́л еси́ на коне́ц мимоше́дшаго дне сего́, обраще́ние и спасе́ние души́ мое́й стро́я? Ми́лостив ми бу́ди гре́шному и обнаже́нному вся́каго де́ла бла́га, возста́ви па́дшую мою́ ду́шу, оскверни́вшуюся в безме́рных согреше́ниих, и отыми́ от мене́ весь по́мысл лука́вый ви́димаго сего́ жития́.
