The Opening Invocation
The prayer begins with the sign of the cross and a humble request for the intercession of the saints.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of your most pure Mother, our holy and God-bearing fathers, and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen. Glory to you, our God, glory to you.
The Descent of the Spirit
A direct petition for the Holy Spirit to dwell within the believer and cleanse the soul.
Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, who are everywhere present and fill all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of life, come and dwell within us; cleanse us from every impurity, and in your goodness save our souls.
The Trisagion and Trinity
The prayer moves into the Trisagion hymn and a series of petitions for mercy and healing addressed to the Holy Trinity.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen. Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse us from our sins; Master, forgive our transgressions; Holy One, visit us and heal our infirmities, for the sake of your name. Lord, have mercy. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen.
The Lord's Prayer
The chapter concludes with the prayer taught by Christ himself.
Our Father in heaven! May your name be kept holy; may your kingdom come; may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the bread we need; forgive us our debts, as we forgive those who owe us; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.12
