Chapter 2MogilaPravIsp.4.2

ПАРФЕНИЙ, Божиею милостию Архиепископ Константинополя, нового Рима, и Вселенский Патриарх

Synodal Approval of the Orthodox Faith

The Patriarch and Synod approve the "Confession of the Orthodox Faith" as it aligns with Church doctrine and canons, confirming only the portion in the vernacular.

In humility, along with the Sacred Synod of Bishops and the Clergy, I have read the book sent to us by the Little Russian Church, which shares our faith. It's titled The Confession of the Orthodox Faith of the Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ and contains three parts: Faith, Love, and Hope. Faith is broken down into the twelve articles of faith, meaning the Sacred Creed. Love is divided into the ten commandments and other duties prescribed by the Sacred and God-inspired Scripture of the Old and New Testament. Hope is presented through the Lord's Prayer and the nine beatitudes of the Holy Gospel. We've found that it agrees in all respects with the doctrines of the Church of Christ and with the sacred canons, and that nothing in it contradicts the Church.12 However, we haven't read the other portion, the one submitted in Latin. Therefore, we only confirm the part written in our own language. By the common judgment of the Synod, we decree that every devout and Orthodox Christian, as a member of the Eastern and Apostolic Church, should read this book and not reject it.3 And that's why we've signed it, for its lasting use.

Date and Signatures of Approval

The document is dated and signed by the Patriarch of Constantinople and other high-ranking clergy and officials, attesting to its authenticity and endorsement.

In the year of Salvation 1645, in the month of March, on the 11th day,4 The Holy Synod's signature, written in its members' own hands, reads as follows:5 Parthenius, by God's mercy Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch.6 Joannicius, by God's mercy Pope and Patriarch of the great city of Alexandria, and Ecumenical Judge.78 Macarius, by God's mercy Patriarch of Antioch, the great city of God.9 Paisios, by God's mercy, Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem.10 Lawrence of Ancyra.11 Gregory, Metropolitan of Larissa.12 Pachomius, of Chalcedon.13 Parthenius of Adrianople.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩The source prints the first of the three parts as "Beрy", a mixed Latin/Cyrillic setting of "Веру" (Faith). Translated as "Faith", which the sentence's own following clause ("where Faith is divided into the twelve articles...") confirms.
  2. 2 ↩"Малоросийской Церкви" is rendered "Little Russian Church", the period designation for the Kyivan metropolitan church that submitted Mogila's Confession; no modern national term is substituted.
  3. 3 ↩"утверждаем" carries the force of formal synodal ratification, not mere agreement; rendered "confirm" to keep that juridical weight.
  4. 4 ↩"В лето Спасения" is the traditional dating formula (Anno Salutis); rendered "In the year of Salvation" to keep the documentary formality of a patriarchal subscription rather than flattening it to "In A.D. 1645."
  5. 5 ↩Russian «собственноручная подпись» means a signature written in one's own hand (an autograph subscription). Rendered here to keep the documentary force of the attestation rather than the flatter "signature."
  6. 6 ↩"Божиею милостию" is the standard hierarchical formula; rendered "by the mercy of God" to keep the mercy sense of милость, which corresponds to the Greek ἐλέῳ Θεοῦ. "By the grace of God" is the more familiar English chancery equivalent but shifts the term to grace/gratia.
  7. 7 ↩"Божиею милостию" is the standard hierarchical formula; rendered "by the mercy of God" to preserve the lexeme милость/misericordia = mercy rather than the flatter "by the grace of God."
  8. 8 ↩"Судия Вселенский" (Judge of the Whole World / Ecumenical Judge) is a historic title of the Patriarch of Alexandria; kept literal rather than paraphrased.
  9. 9 ↩Russian «Божиею милостию» is the formulaic chancery title "by the grace/mercy of God." Rendered here as "by the mercy of God" to match the parallel subscriptions in this section; "by the grace of God" is equally defensible.
  10. 10 ↩"Божиею милостию" is the standard hierarchical signature formula (Latin Dei gratia / Greek ἐλέῳ Θεοῦ). Rendered "by the mercy of God" rather than "by the grace of God" to match the Slavonic милость (mercy) while keeping the formulaic weight of a patriarchal subscription.
  11. 11 ↩A signature line in the list of hierarchs endorsing the Confession. Russian «Лаврентий, Анкирский» renders the Greek Λαυρέντιος of Ankyra (Ancyra, modern Ankara); the name may also appear as Laurentius or Lavrentii. The comma in the source separates the personal name from the see; English idiom folds it into 'of Ancyra.'
  12. 12 ↩The Russian gives only the name and a see-adjective ("Ларисский"), following the convention of a signature list of hierarchs; the title (Metropolitan/Bishop of Larissa) is supplied from that convention and is not explicit in the source.
  13. 13 ↩The Russian gives only a name and see: "Пахомий, Халкидонский" — a signature line in the list of hierarchs subscribing the Confession. Rendered as the conventional English form of the name (Pachomius) with the see of Chalcedon; "of Chalcedon" could equally be printed "Metropolitan of Chalcedon" if the surrounding list supplies the title.
  14. 14 ↩The Russian "Иоанникий, Веррийский" is a signature line: personal name plus the adjectival form of the episcopal see. "Веррийский" renders Greek Βέρροια — the Macedonian city of Beroea (modern Veria, Greece). The name is given in its conventional English ecclesiastical form, Joannicius (Greek Ἰωαννίκιος); "Ioannikios of Veroia" is an equally defensible transliteration.
  15. 15 ↩The Russian gives the name plus the adjectival see-name ("Родосский"), the standard signature form for a bishop subscribing a conciliar document. Rendered as "of Rhodes" rather than the literal "Rhodian" to match how episcopal titles read in English.
  16. 16 ↩A signatory line from the list of hierarchs endorsing the Confession. Мефимнийский is the see-adjective for Methymna on Lesbos; the Russian form transliterates Greek Μηθύμνης. Rendered as the standard English episcopal style "of Methymna"; the bearer's rank (metropolitan) is not stated in the source and has not been supplied.
  17. 17 ↩The Russian gives only a name plus a place-adjective ("Хийский" = "of Chios"), with no office named. In this list of subscribing hierarchs the form almost certainly designates the metropolitan/bishop of Chios; the title is left unstated because the source leaves it unstated.
  18. 18 ↩"Великий Логофет" is the Grand Logothete, the senior lay chancellor-official of the Ecumenical Patriarchate ("the Great Church" = Hagia Sophia / the Patriarchate of Constantinople). The title is kept rather than paraphrased as "chancellor," since it is a specific office.
  19. 19 ↩"Великий Эконом" is the Grand Oeconomus (Greek οἰκονόμος), the official charged with the Church's administration and property; "Grand Steward" is an equally faithful rendering.
  20. 20 ↩"Феолог" is here the signatory's personal name (Theologos), not the descriptive title "the Theologian." "Сакелларий" is transliterated as Sakellarios, a Patriarchal office of the Great Church (Hagia Sophia) overseeing monasteries and church funds; "великий" is rendered "Grand" in keeping with the Greek office titles (Grand Logothete, Grand Oikonomos, Grand Rhetor) in the surrounding signature list.
  21. 21 ↩"Сакеллий" (Sakellios) names a distinct Byzantine ecclesiastical office from the "великий Сакелларий" (Grand Sakellarios) of the preceding signature, so the two titles are kept apart rather than merged; the Sakellios administered the patriarchal sakellion (treasury/monastic oversight). Left untranslated as a title of office, since no plain English equivalent exists.
  22. 22 ↩The chartophylax was the patriarchate's chief archivist and record-keeper, one of the senior administrative officers of the Great Church (Hagia Sophia in Constantinople). The title is kept rather than translated, since no English office corresponds to it.
  23. 23 ↩The protekdikos headed the ekdikoi, the patriarchate's legal advocates, and handled judicial and asylum cases for the Great Church. The title is kept rather than translated.
  24. 24 ↩The source reads "Фома Власть" — literally "Thomas Power." This almost certainly reflects a Russian calque or garbling of the Greek family name Βλαστός (Vlastos), not an actual byname meaning "power." Rendered as the surname Vlastos; flagged for reviewer confirmation against the Greek subscription list.
  25. 25 ↩"Протонотариус" is the Greek office of prōtonotarios, the chief notary of the patriarchal chancery of Constantinople; rendered "Protonotary" rather than a generic "chief secretary" to keep the office identifiable.
  26. 26 ↩"Протоапостоларий" (prōtapostolarios) is the officer who led the chanting of the Apostolic readings in the Great Church; there is no settled English equivalent, so the Greek title is transliterated.
  27. 27 ↩"Ипомниматограф" transliterates the Byzantine office ὑπομνηματογράφος, the official who drew up and kept the patriarchate's official memoranda and acts. Left as a transliterated title rather than translated as "recorder" or "secretary," since the surrounding subscription list preserves the Greek chancery titles as titles.
  28. 28 ↩"Дикеофилакс" transliterates δικαιοφύλαξ, "guardian of the rights (or of justice)" — a judicial officer of the patriarchal court. Kept as a transliterated title for consistency with the other offices in this signature list.
  29. 29 ↩The Russian «Хрисоскул» transliterates a Greek surname, most likely Chrysoskoulos (Χρυσόσκουλος); the exact Greek form is not recoverable from the Russian alone. «Логофет общественной казны» renders the Constantinopolitan patriarchal office of logothete — the senior official responsible for the Great Church's public funds — and is kept as 'Logothete' rather than flattened to 'treasurer' so the office title stays identifiable.
