What is Almsgiving?
Almsgiving is an act of mercy towards those in need, essential for Christians, and promised great reward in heaven.
Question 9. What is almsgiving? Answer. Almsgiving is an act of mercy, consisting in the bestowal of a benefit upon the soul or body of a needy person, without regard to the person who is in need of such alms. This virtue is absolutely essential for a Christian, as Scripture teaches: “for charity delivers from death and purges every sin; those who practice charity and righteousness will be filled with life” (Tobit 12:9). And in the New Testament, praising charity, it says: “Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven” (Matt. 19:21). Christ promises a great reward to the merciful on the last day: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Then he will say:
The Power of Almsgiving
Almsgiving, especially when combined with prayer, makes prayers favorable to God and encompasses all acts of mercy.
. . “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matt. 25:40, 34). Almsgiving, combined with fasting, makes prayer pleasing to God, so that He hears it, just as the angel told Cornelius: “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God” (Acts 10:4). All works of mercy, which we mentioned in the second part of this Orthodox Confession, are included in this virtue.

The chapter concludes by introducing the four cardinal virtues: wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance.

Ответ. Милостыня есть дело милосердия, состоящее в том, когда кто-нибудь оказывает благодеяние душе или телу нуждающегося человека, не разбирая лица, которое имеет нужду в таковой милостыне. Сия добродетель есть самая необходимая для человека Христианина, как учит Священное Писание: «милостыня бо от смерти избавляет и тая очищает всяк грех: творящии милостыни и правды исполнятся жизни» (Тов. 12, 9). И в Новом Завете, похваляя милостыню, так оно говорит: «иди, продаждь имение твое и даждь нищым: и имети имаши сокровище на небеси» (Мф. 19, 21). Христос обещает дать великую награду милостивым и на последнем суде: «аминь глаголю вам, понеже сотвористе единому сих братий Моих менших, мне сотвористе. Тогда речет.
. . приидите, благословеннии Отца Моего, наследуйте уготованное вам Царствие от сложения мира» (Мф. 25:40, 34). Милостыня, соединенная с постом, соделывает молитву, благоприятную Богу, так что Он выслушивает оную, как Ангел сказал к Корнилию: «молитвы твоя и милостыни твоя взыдоша на память пред Бога» (Деян. 10, 4). В сей добродетели заключаются все дела милосердия, о которых мы сказали во второй части сего Православного Исповедания.

Ответ. Четыре главные добродетели: мудрость, справедливость, мужество и воздержание.
