What is Fasting?
Fasting is a Christian virtue involving abstinence from food, drink, worldly matters, and evil desires to aid prayer, mortify the flesh, and receive God's grace, as exemplified by Scripture and the repentance of Nineveh.
Question 7. What is fasting? Answer. Fasting, that which belongs to the number of Christian virtues, is abstinence from all, or, due to some infirmity, from certain foods, as well as from drink; also from all worldly things, and from all evil desires, with the aim that the Christian may more easily offer his prayer and appease God; also, that he may mortify carnal desires and receive God's grace. Regarding such fasting, Scripture says: “in all things presenting ourselves as servants of God, with great endurance, in hardships, in difficulties, in distresses, in beatings, in prisons, in riots, in labors, in sleepless nights, in fastings” (2 Cor. 6:4–5). And elsewhere: “Blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the people,” and further down: “Spare your people, Lord, and do not make your heritage an object of reproach” (Joel 2:15–17). When practiced correctly, this kind of fasting greatly helps in appeasing God for our sins, as the example of Nineveh shows. This topic is discussed more extensively in the Church's rules.
Types of Fasting
Fasting is twofold: regular, observed at set times like the four annual fasts and Wednesdays/Fridays, and occasional, prescribed by Church leaders for specific reasons; it can also be general (the whole Church) or private (individual or group).
Question 8. How many kinds of fasting are there? Answer. Fasting is twofold. One is observed according to the accepted custom at certain fixed times, such as the four fasts of the year, and also the fasts on Wednesdays and Fridays. Another occurs occasionally and at a specific time, observed for reasons that arise in particular cities and regions; it is prescribed by the Head of the Church. Such a fast should be kept to show obedience to the Church. Fasting is also general and private. General fasting is what the entire Church observes; private fasting is what a specific region, or city, or village, or an individual person keeps alone. And this happens either by a private vow made by someone on their own, or by appointment from a Spiritual Father.

Ответ. Пост – тот именно, который принадлежит к числу Христианских добродетелей, – есть воздержание от всех, или, по причине какой-либо немощи, от некоторых яств, равно и от пития: также от всех мирских предметов, и от всех худых пожеланий, с тою целию, чтобы Христианин удобнее мог совершать молитву свою и умилостивлять Бога; также, чтобы мог умертвить плотские вожделения и получить благодать Божию. О таковом посте Священное Писание говорит так: «во всем представляюще себе якоже Божия слуги, в терпении мнозе, в скорбех, в бедах, в теснотах, в ранах, в темницах, в нестроениих (в изгнаниях), в трудех, во бдениих, в пощениих» (2Кор. 6, 4–5). И в другом месте: «Вострубите трубою в Сионе, освятите пост, проповедите целъбу, соберите люди», и ниже: «пощади, Господи, люди Твоя и не даждь достояния Твоего на укоризну» (Иоил. 2, 15–17). Вопрос 8. Сколько родов поста?
Ответ. Пост есть двоякий. Один совершается по принятому обычаю в некоторые определенные времена, как-то: четыре поста в год, также пост по средам и пяткам. Другой бывает по случаю и единовременно, и совершается по каким-нибудь причинам, открывающимся в известных городах и областях: его предписывает Предстоятель Церкви. Таковой пост должно соблюдать для того, чтобы явить послушание Церкви. Еще пост есть общий и частный. Общий, который соблюдает вся Церковь; частный, который содержит одна известная область, или город, или селение, или один человек особливо. И это бывает или по частному обету, сделанному кем-либо от себя, или по назначению Духовного Отца.
