The First Beatitude
This pericope introduces the first beatitude, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,' and quotes its scriptural reference.
Question 30. What is the first beatitude? Answer. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:3).
The Meaning of Spiritual Poverty
This section explains that spiritual poverty involves using worldly possessions as a steward, not a master, and ideally, sharing all things in common like the early Christians.
Question 31. What teaching does the first beatitude contain? Answer. The teaching about wealth and worldly things: if they come to someone abundantly, by God's grace, that person should use them not as their full owner, but as a steward, and should not desire them with excessive greed of heart, according to the words of the Holy Psalmist: “If riches increase, do not set your heart on them” (Ps. 61:11). And further, imitating the perfection of the early Christians, we should have nothing of our own, but all things should be common to us, as among the first Christians, of whom Holy Scripture testifies thus: “The multitude of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one called any of his possessions his own, but all things were common to them.” And further: "For those who owned farms or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of the sale and laid them at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made to each according to his need." And again: "All the believers were one in spirit and in heart, and they shared everything they had." (Acts 4:32, 34–35, 2:44). This kind of virtue is called poverty of spirit.
Living Out Spiritual Poverty
This pericope discusses how spiritual poverty is lived out through moderate use of possessions, especially for monastics who endure hardship, and how charitable giving of wealth also aligns with this virtue.
However, it is permissible for each person to take from the common stock only what is deemed sufficient for a decent and equal livelihood and clothing, rejecting all excess and vain adornments. Ascetics and monks are especially bound to practice this virtue. They should not only avoid worrying about their own necessary food and clothing but, in hope of a greater reward in heaven, should endure even a lack of these things, keeping these words of the Apostle before their eyes: "To this very hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and beaten, and wander about, and we work with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we entreat. We have become the world's refuse, the last of all things until now." (1 Cor. 4:11–13). For such endurance, Christ promises His heavenly Kingdom. Yet, those who have acquired property and wealth legitimately and use it rightly—that is, by donating to church needs, to alms for the poor, strangers, the infirm, and other needy people, following the example of Zacchaeus, who said before Christ: "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will restore it fourfold" (Luke 19, 8). But all those who fall into extreme poverty through extravagance and debauchery cannot expect to receive any reward from God for such poverty.
Repentance and Continued Mercy
Those who fall into poverty through wastefulness should repent, and the faithful should continue to show them mercy, as they may still receive reward if they turn to a life of moderation.
Instead, they should repent for wasting and misusing their possessions. Nevertheless, Orthodox Christians should not exclude them from their mercy. And if they turn to a life of moderation, they won't lose their reward.
