ORATIO LXII [ol. LXI]. AD ANGELUM CUSTODEM.

Entreaty for Constant Angelic Protection

The soul beseeches the guardian angel to guard, protect, and defend against every satanic assault, and to obtain mercy through prayer where human merits fall short.

I beg you, angelic spirit, to whom God has entrusted me for your watchful care — guard me without ceasing, protect me, visit me, and defend me from every assault of the devil, whether I'm awake or asleep, by night and by day, through every passing hour and moment, cherish me; and wherever I go, walk with me. Drive every temptation of Satan far from me, and since my own merits aren't enough, obtain for me by your prayers mercy before the most merciful Judge and our Lord, who assigned you to me as my guardian and commended me to you, so that no hostile power may find any foothold in me.

Guidance Back from the Paths of Vice

The soul asks the angel to redirect it from vice toward justice and to help it recognize God's power in times of distress.

And whenever you see me straying down the steep paths of vice, strive to lead me back along the paths of justice to my Redeemer, and whenever you see me in any distress, help me to perceive that the power of almighty God is over me through your intercession.

A Prayer for a Holy Death and Eternal Joy

The soul prays for foreknowledge of death, deliverance from demonic terror, and safe passage to the beatific vision of the Creator.

I pray, then, if it can be done, that you make my end known to me, and when I've been led forth from this body, don't allow evil spirits to frighten me or mock me, or to lead me into the pit of despair. And don't abandon me until you lead me to the sight of my Creator, where, through your intercession, I may deserve to rejoice forever with all the saints, our Lord Jesus Christ granting it.

There are 90 more prayers where these came from

Chosen Portion delivers the full Anselm collection — and the wider royal devotional archive — one daily prayer at a time, free.

Anselm told Adeliza to take these prayers a little at a time, and Chosen Portion does exactly that — serving the collection as paced daily portions rather than a book to skim.

  • Pray through all 97 of Anselm's prayers and meditations, one portion each day
  • Each prayer is broken into short sections so a 100-sentence meditation fits a 10-minute sitting
  • Morning reminder at your chosen time, so the day starts with a written prayer instead of a blank
