Από το βίο του άγιου Θεοδοσίου του Κοινοβιάρχου
The Wounded Heart of Theodosius
Saint Theodosius, wounded by divine love, fulfilled the great commandment by gathering his soul's powers toward God, and he taught his disciples to gather their senses inward, living in solitary calm even amid the cenobium.
The godly Theodosius had been so deeply wounded by the sweet arrow of love, and so tightly bound by its bonds, that he took care to fulfill in deeds that lofty and divine commandment: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" — something that can be done in no other way than by gathering the soul's natural powers solely into longing for the Creator, and into nothing else among the things of this present life. So when he was counseling by these noetic energies of the soul, he was formidable to many; and yet even when he rebuked his disciples, he remained dear and sweet to them in everything.1 Who else was as beneficial as he while living among many? Or so able to teach his disciples to gather their senses and turn them inward, so that they, despite the noise of the cenobium, lived in greater calm than hermits? And at the same time, who else could both be among the crowd and yet remain solitary? So then, see also the Great Theodosius: by gathering his senses and turning them inward, he was wounded by the love of God.

Ο θείος Θεοδόσιος είχε πληγωθεί τόσο πολύ από το γλυκό βέλος της αγάπης και ήταν δεμένος τόσο πολύ από τά δεσμά της, ώστε το «Θ’ αγαπήσεις τον Κύριο, το Θεό σου, με όλη σου την καρδιά, με όλη σου την ψυχή και με όλη τη διάνοιά σου», αυτή την υψηλή και θεία εντολή, φρόντιζε να την εκπληρώνει με έργα, πράγμα που δεν μπορεί να γίνει με άλλον τρόπο παρά με την συγκέντρωση των φυσικών δυνάμεων της ψυχής μόνο στον πόθο του Δημιουργού και σε κανένα άλλο από τα παρόντα. Νουθετώντας λοιπόν μ’ αυτές τις νοερές ενέργειές της ήταν φοβερός στους πολλούς, αλλά και όταν μάλωνε τους υποτακτικούς του, τους ήταν ποθητός και γλυκύς σε όλα. Ποιος άλλος ήταν σαν κι αυτόν τόσο ωφέλιμος ενώ συναναστρεφόταν με πολλούς; Ή τόσο ικανός να μαθαίνει στους υποτακτικούς του να συνάγουν τις αισθήσεις τους και να τις στρέφουν στο εσωτερικό τους, έτσι ώστε αυτοί, παρά τους θορύβους του Κοινοβίου, να ζουν με περισσότερη γαλήνη από τους ερημίτες; Και συγχρόνως ο ίδιος και με το πλήθος να βρίσκεται αλλά και απομονωμένος να είναι;
Ιδού λοιπόν και ο Μέγας Θεοδόσιος, με το να συνάγει και να στρέφει μέσα του τις αισθήσεις, πληγώθηκε από την αγάπη του Θεού.
Notes
- 1 ↩Greek τῆς is feminine and most naturally points back to ψυχή (soul) from the previous sentence; less likely to ἀγάπη (love). Rendered as "of the soul."
