Arsenios' Discipline of Silence

Saint Arsenios refrained from discussing Scripture not from inability but from a deep habit of silence and aversion to display.

Saint Arsenios also kept this admirable habit: he would not raise questions of Holy Scripture either for discussion or for correspondence. Not that he lacked the ability—far from it. For him, helpful speech came as easily as ordinary speech does for others. But the habit of silence and the aversion he felt toward display were what drove his practice.

Hidden for God's Sake

Arsenios hid himself in churches and gatherings to avoid notice, gather his mind within, and rise easily to God, an example for all.

So for that reason, both in churches and in gatherings, he took great care neither to see others nor to be seen by them, but would stand behind some pillar or other thing that blocked the view and hid himself, so that, unseen, he could avoid other people's company.1 And he did this because he wanted to attend to himself and gather his mind within, and so rise easily to God. So look: this divine man, this earthly angel, collects his mind within himself so that from there he can rise easily to God.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Greek «καμία κολώνα» is indefinite affirmative ('some pillar'), not negative ('no pillar').
