Once, two brothers were on their way to Abba Anthony. And because they ran out of water on the road, one of them died, and the other was close to dying. Unable to walk any farther, he fell to the ground, waiting for death. But Anthony, who was sitting on the mountain, quickly called two monks who happened to be there and said to them: "Take a jar of water and run to the road toward Egypt. Two men were coming this way, and one has just died, while the other is in danger if you don't hurry. This was revealed to me while I was praying." So the monks went and found one of them dead and buried him, while they revived the other with the water and brought him to the Elder. The distance was a day's journey. If someone now asks why he didn't say so before the other monk died, that person isn't asking the right question. Because the judgment about death isn't Anthony's, but God's, who both decided for the one and revealed what concerned the other. What was marvelous about Anthony was that, sitting there on the mountain, he kept watchfulness in his heart, and the Lord showed him what was happening far away.1 Do you see that, by keeping watchfulness in his heart, Anthony became a seer of God and a man of foresight? For God appears to the mind through the heart—first, as Saint John of the Ladder says, like a fire that purifies His lover, and then also like a light that makes the mind radiant and godlike.23 And now let's move on to those who come next.
Notes
- 1 ↩νήψη rendered as 'watchfulness' (nepsis), the governing ascetical term of this work.
- 2 ↩θεόπτης rendered 'seer of God'; προορατικός as 'man of foresight' (gifted with spiritual foreknowledge).
- 3 ↩για να έχει taken in the demotic causal/means sense ('by keeping / because he kept'), which fits the hagiographic argument better than a pure purpose clause.
