The Noetic Struggle and Its Aim

The devil shakes the reasoning faculty, but unceasing remembrance of God stamped on the heart by the cross strengthens it; this is the aim of the noetic struggle, for which all ascetic practice is undertaken to restore original dignity and seal Christ in the mind.

Ever since he caused man to be banished from Paradise and from God because of his disobedience, the devil, together with the demons, has been able to shake every person's reasoning faculty in the mind, day and night—some a great deal, some a little, and some still more.1 And the reasoning faculty cannot be fortified in any other way than by the unceasing remembrance of God. That is, if the divine remembrance is stamped on the heart by the power of the cross, it will strengthen the reasoning faculty and make it unshakable.2 This is the aim of the noetic struggle, the struggle every Christian has been appointed to fight in the stadium of Christ's faith; otherwise he will struggle in vain.3 For the sake of this struggle comes all the varied ascetic practice of everyone who endures hardship for God—and this so that he may move the compassion of the Good One, and so that He may restore to him the original dignity and seal Christ upon his reasoning faculty, as the Apostle says: "My little children, I am again in the pains of childbirth for you, until Christ is formed in you."45

Exhortation to the Spiritual Method

The author asks if the brothers see that there is a spiritual method that quickly leads to dispassion and vision of God, and warns that ascesis without guarding the mind is fruitless, urging them to hurry lest they die fruitless.

Do you see, brothers, that there is a spiritual art—a method, that is—which quickly raises the one who practices it to dispassion and to the vision of God? Have you now been assured that all practical ascesis is counted by God like the leaves on a tree that bears no fruit? And that it will be wasted in every soul that has no guarding of the mind? So let us hurry, so that we don't die fruitless and repent in vain.6

Notes

  1. 1 ↩λογιστικό is rendered as 'reasoning faculty' (the discursive/rational part of the soul in hesychast anthropology), not mere 'thoughts' or 'psyche'.
  2. 2 ↩το in θα το στερεώσει points back to το λογιστικό; made explicit as 'the reasoning faculty' for clarity.
  3. 3 ↩νοητός αγώνας kept as 'noetic struggle' (the interior contest of the mind in hesychast usage), not flattened to a generic 'spiritual fight'.
  4. 4 ↩κάμψει τα σπλάχνα του Αγαθού rendered as 'move the compassion of the Good One' (God); σπλάχνα is biblical visceral compassion, not physical organs.
  5. 5 ↩αρχικό αξίωμα rendered as 'original dignity' (prelapsarian rank/status), not bureaucratic 'office'.
  6. 6 ↩ἀπάθεια rendered as 'dispassion' (the standard hesychast technical term for freedom from the passions, not emotional numbness). θεοπτία rendered as 'vision of God'.
