De dormitione Domini in navicula
Jesus Sleeps in the Boat
Jesus rests in the boat while a storm arises and the disciples grow afraid to wake him.
When Jesus, the Lord, had gotten into the boat with his disciples, he lay down to sleep, resting his head on a cushion.✦ For he himself kept watch much of the night in prayer, and labored much of the day in preaching. And while he was sleeping, a storm arose, and the disciples were afraid they were in danger; but they did not dare to wake him.✦
The Disciples Wake the Lord
The disciples cry out in fear, and Jesus calms the storm after rebuking their little faith.
At last, compelled by fear, they woke him, saying, 'Lord, save us — we are perishing!'✦ He rose and rebuked them for their little faith, and commanded the sea and the winds, and the storm ceased.✦
Watch, Observe, and Trust
The reader is invited to observe Christ's example, trust his watchful care amid affliction, and remain steadfast in faith.
In the deeds just described, therefore, observe him and look upon him, according to the general rule or the tradition handed down above. Here, however, you can consider this: that concerning us and our deeds, the Lord may seem to be asleep — especially when we are afflicted — yet he himself is most diligent in watching over our protection. And for this reason we ought to be steadfast in faith, hesitating at nothing.

Intrans Dominus Jesus in naviculam cum discipulis suis, posuit se ad dormiendum S tenens caput super cervicali.
