The Nature of Confession

Confession is defined as the act of acknowledging sins before God and receiving the assurance of forgiveness through a confessor.

How should we teach the simple to confess? What is confession? Answer: Confession consists of two parts: first, that we confess our sins; second, that we receive absolution or forgiveness from the confessor, as from God Himself. We shouldn't doubt this, but firmly believe that our sins are forgiven before God in heaven. Which sins should you confess? Before God, you should acknowledge all sins, even those you don't recognize, just as you do in the Lord's Prayer; but before a confessor, you should only confess the sins you know and feel in your heart. What are they? Examine your life according to the Ten Commandments: whether you are a father, mother, son, daughter, master, mistress, or servant; whether you've been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy; whether you've caused anyone pain with your words or actions; or whether you've stolen from, neglected, or harmed anyone.

A Guide for Personal Confession

Practical instructions and a sample prayer are provided to help the faithful confess their specific sins and seek grace.

Dear Lord, please show me a brief way to confess! This is how you should speak to your confessor: "Worthy dear Lord, I ask you to hear my confession and grant me forgiveness for God's sake." Say it! I, a poor sinner, confess before God that I am guilty of all sins; specifically, I confess before You that I am a servant, a maid, and so on. I am. But I unfortunately serve my Lord unfaithfully; for here and there I have not done what they commanded me, I have angered them and led them to curse, I have neglected and allowed harm to happen, I have also been shameless in words and deeds, I have quarreled with my peers, murmured against my wife, and cursed, etc. I regret all of this and ask for grace; I want to do better. A man or woman should say: Especially I confess before you that I have not raised my child and servant, my wife, faithfully for the honor of God. I have sworn, set bad examples with unseemly words and deeds, harmed my neighbor, spoken ill of him, sold things at too high a price, and provided false or incomplete goods. And whatever more I have done against God's commandments and my station, etc., if someone does not find himself burdened with such or greater sin, he should not worry or seek further sins or fabricate them, thus making a torment of confession, but should recount one or two that he knows, saying: Especially I confess that I have sworn once, likewise, I have been unseemly with words once, once this N. I have neglected, etc. Let that be enough. But if you know of none at all (which should not be possible), then do not mention any particularly, but take the forgiveness upon the general confession that you make before God against the confessor.

The Absolution

The confessor pronounces God's forgiveness, confirming that the absolution received is as certain as if spoken by Christ Himself.

Then the confessor should say: May God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith! Amen. Next: Do you also believe that my forgiveness is God's forgiveness? Yes, dear Lord. Then he said: As you believe, so may it be done for you. And I, by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive you your sin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace. If someone has a heavy burden on their conscience or is troubled and distressed, a confessor will know how to offer more words of comfort and encourage them to believe. This is the general way of confession for the simple.

The Office of the Keys

The Church exercises the authority given by Christ to forgive the penitent and retain the sins of the unrepentant.

What is the Office of the Keys? Answer: The Office of the Keys is the special authority Christ gave to His Church on earth to forgive the sins of those who are penitent and to retain the sins of those who are unrepentant, as long as they don't repent. Where is this written? Answer: The holy Evangelist John writes this in chapter 20. The Lord Jesus breathed on his disciples and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit!' If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained. What do you believe about these words? Answer: I believe what the appointed servants of Christ do with us by His divine command, especially when they exclude public and unrepentant sinners from the Christian community and absolve those who repent of their sins and wish to improve: that it is thus powerful and certain, even in heaven, as if our dear Lord Christ were acting with us Himself.

Welche Sünden soll man denn beichten?

Sage an!

Amen. Gehe hin in Frieden.

Was glaubst du bei diesen Worten?
