The Nature of the Sacrament
The Sacrament of the Altar is the true body and blood of Christ under bread and wine, instituted for our consumption.
Just as a father of a household should simply present the same to his family. What is the Sacrament of the Altar? Answer: It is the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us Christians to eat and drink.
The Words of Institution
The scriptural account of the Last Supper provides the foundation for the sacrament.
Where is this written? Answer: So write the holy evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Paul: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, he took the cup after the meal, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying: Take, drink from it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
The Benefit of the Sacrament
The sacrament offers the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.
What is the benefit of such eating and drinking? The answer is that these words show us: 'Given for you and poured out for the forgiveness of sins.' This means that in the Sacrament, forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given to us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.
The Power of the Word
It is not the physical act of eating and drinking that saves, but the promise of the words attached to the elements.
How can physical eating and drinking accomplish such great things? Answer: Eating and drinking don’t do it, but the words that say: 'Given and poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.' Which words are alongside the physical eating and drinking as the main point in the Sacrament; and whoever believes those words has what they say and how they sound, namely, the forgiveness of sins.
Worthy Reception
True worthiness for the sacrament is found in faith in the promise of forgiveness.
Who receives such a Sacrament worthily? Answer: Fasting and physical preparation are certainly fine external disciplines; but the person who is truly worthy and well-prepared is the one who believes these words: 'Given for you and shed for the forgiveness of sins.' But anyone who doesn't believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unfit. For the word 'For you!' require nothing but believing hearts.

Wie ein Hausvater dasselbe seinem Hause einfältiglich vorhalten soll. Was ist das Sakrament des Altars? Antwort: Es ist der wahre Leib und Blut unsers Herrn Jesu Christi unter dem Brot und Wein, uns Christen zu essen und zu trinken von Christus selbst eingesetzt.
Wo steht das geschrieben? Antwort: So schreiben die heiligen Evangelisten Matthäus, Markus, Lukas und St. Paulus: Unser Herr Jesus Christus, in der Nacht, da er verraten ward, nahm er das Brot, dankte und brachs und gabs seinen Jüngern und sprach: Nehmet hin, esset; das ist mein Leib, der für euch gegeben wird. Solches tut zu meinem Gedächtnis. Desselbigengleichen nahm er auch den Kelch nach dem Abendmahl, dankte und gab ihnen den und sprach: Nehmet hin und trinket alle daraus; dieser Kelch ist das Neue Testament in meinem Blut, das für euch vergossen wird zur Vergebung der Sünden. Solches tut, sooft ihrs trinket, zu meinem Gedächtnis.
Was nützt denn solch Essen und Trinken? Antwort: Das zeigen uns die Worte: Für euch gegeben und vergossen zur Vergebung der Sünden. Nämlich dass uns im Sakrament Vergebung der Sünden, Leben und Seligkeit durch solche Worte gegeben wird. Denn wo Vergebung der Sünden ist, da ist auch Leben und Seligkeit.
Wie kann leiblich Essen und Trinken solche große Dinge tun? Antwort: Essen und Trinken tut’s freilich nicht, sondern die Worte, so da stehen: Für euch gegeben und vergossen zur Vergebung der Sünden. Welche Worte sind neben dem leiblichen Essen und Trinken (als) das Hauptstück im Sakrament; und wer denselben Worten glaubet, der hat, was sie sagen und wie sie lauten, nämlich Vergebung der Sünden.
Wer empfängt denn solch Sakrament würdig? Antwort: Fasten und leiblich sich bereiten ist wohl eine feine äußerliche Zucht; aber der ist recht würdig und wohl geschickt, wer den Glauben hat an diese Worte: Für euch gegeben und vergossen zur Vergebung der Sünden. Wer aber diesen Worten nicht glaubet oder zweifelt, der ist unwürdig und ungeschickt. Denn das Wort „Für euch! “ fordert nichts als gläubige Herzen.
