Mother Alexandra's Final Counsel and Repose
Mother Agafya asks Seraphim not to abandon her monastery, then reposes; the elders bury her at Diveyevo.
Mother Agafya Semyonovna began to ask Father. Seraphim not to abandon her monastery, as the Queen of Heaven Herself would then be pleased to instruct him concerning that. The elders said their goodbyes and left, and the wondrous elderess Agafya Semyonovna reposed on June 13, on the day of St. the martyr Aquilina. Father1 Pachomius and the brothers, on the way back, arrived just in time for Mother Alexandra's burial. After serving the Liturgy and the funeral service together, the great elders buried the foundress of the Diveyevo community opposite the altar of the Kazan church. All day on June 13, it rained so torrentially that not a dry thread remained on anyone, but Fr. Seraphim, out of his chastity, did not even stay to dine in the women's monastery and immediately after the burial walked to Sarov.
The Vision of Christ at the Liturgy
During Holy Thursday Liturgy, Seraphim sees the Lord Jesus Christ surrounded by heavenly powers and receives a special blessing.
Once, on Holy Thursday, the builder Fr. Pachomius, who never served without Fr. Seraphim, began the Divine Liturgy at two in the afternoon with Vespers, and after the Little Entrance and the paremias Hierodeacon Seraphim proclaimed: "Lord, save the pious and hear us!"2 But he had barely turned to the people and pointed his orarion at those standing before him to proclaim, "and unto ages of ages," when his appearance suddenly changed so much that he could neither leave his place nor utter a word. Everyone noticed this and understood that he was experiencing a visitation from God. Two hierodeacons took him by the arms, led him into the sanctuary, and left him to one side, where he stood for about three hours as his appearance continually changed. Afterward, when he had come to himself, he privately told the builder and the treasurer about his vision: "I had just proclaimed, poor as I am: Lord, save the pious and hear us!"3 and, pointing the orarion at the people, finished: and unto ages of ages! — suddenly a ray, as of sunlight, shone upon me; looking at that radiance, I saw our Lord and God Jesus Christ in the form of the Son of Man, shining in glory and with ineffable light, surrounded by the heavenly powers—Angels, Archangels, Cherubim, and Seraphim—like a swarm of bees, and coming on the air from the western church doors; approaching the ambo in that form and raising His most pure hands, the Lord blessed those serving and those standing present; after this, entering into the holy4 His local icon, the one to the right of the royal doors, was transfigured, surrounded by ranks of angels that filled the entire church with an ineffable light.5 But I, earth and ashes, meeting the Lord Jesus then in the air, was granted a special blessing from Him; my heart rejoiced purely and with enlightenment, in the sweetness of love for the Lord!”
Ordination to the Priesthood
Seraphim is ordained a hieromonk and begins to serve with increased zeal and daily Communion.
In 1793, Fr. Seraphim turned thirty-four, and the authorities, seeing that his ascetic labors had raised him above the other brothers and that he deserved precedence over many, petitioned for his elevation to the rank of hieromonk. Since in that same year the Sarov monastery, under a new arrangement, moved from the Vladimir diocese to the Tambov diocese, Fr. Seraphim was summoned to Tambov, and on September 2, Bishop Theophilus ordained him a hieromonk. Upon receiving the higher grace of the priesthood, Fr. Seraphim began to strive in the spiritual life with even greater zeal and doubled love. For a long time he continued to serve without interruption, receiving Communion daily with fervent love, faith, and reverence.6
The Call to the Wilderness
Seraphim resolves to embrace the eremitic life due to his calling and illness, seeking a blessing for greater ascetic labors.
Having become a hieromonk, Fr. Seraphim resolved to settle entirely in the wilderness, since the hermit life was his calling and appointment from above. Besides, from unceasing vigil in his cell and from constantly standing on his feet in church with little rest at night, Fr. Seraphim fell ill: his legs swelled, and sores opened on them, so that for a time he lost the ability to celebrate the sacred services. This illness was no small inducement to choose the hermit life, though for rest he ought to have asked the abbot, Fr. Pachomius for a blessing to withdraw to the infirmary cells, and not into the wilderness, i. e. from lesser labors to greater and more severe ones.
Serving Elder Pachomius in His Final Illness
Seraphim receives Pachomius's last blessing and selflessly cares for the dying elder, who is also troubled by spiritual concern.
The great elder Pachomius gave him his blessing. This was the last blessing received by Fr. Seraphim from the wise, virtuous, and venerable elder, because of that elder's illness and approaching death.7 Fr. Seraphim, remembering well how during his illness Fr. Pachomius had looked after him, now himself served him with selfless devotion. Once Fr. Seraphim noticed that, added to Fr. Pachomius also felt a sense of spiritual concern and sorrow.8
The Promise to Care for Diveyevo
Seraphim asks about Pachomius's sorrow, learns of his worry for the Diveyevo sisters, and promises to care for them, then mourns the elder's death and withdraws to the wilderness.
Why are you so sorrowful, holy father? The father asked him—9 Seraphim. “I grieve for the sisters of the Diveyevo community,” answered Elder Pachomius, “who will look after them after me?” Father.10 Seraphim, wishing to calm the elder in his dying moments, promised to watch over them himself and keep everything just as it had been under him after his death. This promise calmed and gladdened Father, who was departing to the Lord. Pachomius. He kissed Father. Seraphim, and then soon fell asleep with the peaceful sleep of the righteous.11 Father.12 Seraphim bitterly mourned the loss of Elder Pachomius and, with the blessing of the new abbot, Father
Withdrawal into the Wilderness
With the new abbot's blessing, Seraphim withdraws to a wilderness cell on November 20, 1794.
Isaiah, whom he also dearly loved, withdrew into a wilderness cell (on November 20, 1794, the day of his arrival at the Sarov Hermitage).
