Building the Hospital Church
Prokhor, grateful for his healing, labors to build a hospital church and collects funds, even building an altar with his own hands.
During Prokhor's novitiate, under the superior Fr. Under Pachomius, many necessary buildings were undertaken in the Sarov Hermitage. Among them, on the site of the cell where Prokhor had been ill, a hospital was being built for treating the sick and giving rest to the elderly, and with the hospital a two-story church with altars: in the lower dedicated to Sts.1 Zosima and Sabbatius, the wonderworkers of Solovki, and in the upper — to the glory of the Transfiguration of the Savior. After his illness, Prokhor, still a young novice, was sent to various places to collect money for building the church. Grateful for his healing and for the superiors' care, he willingly took on the hard labor of collecting funds.2 Traveling through the towns nearest to Sarov, Prokhor was also in Kursk, his hometown, but he no longer found his mother alive. His brother Alexei, for his part, gave Prokhor no small help toward building the church. When he returned home, Prokhor, as a skilled carpenter, built with his own hands an altar of cypress wood for the lower hospital church in honor of the Venerable Zosima and Savvaty.
The Novice's Maturity
After eight years as a novice, Prokhor's physical appearance and spiritual readiness for monastic vows are described.
For eight years young Prokhor was a novice. By this time his outward appearance had changed: being tall, about two arshins3 and eight vershoks; despite his strict abstinence and ascetic labors, he had a full face of a pleasant fairness, a straight and sharp nose, light-blue eyes that were very expressive and penetrating; thick eyebrows and light auburn hair on his head.4 His face was framed by a thick, full beard, which joined at the corners of his mouth with long, thick mustaches. He had a manly build, possessed great physical strength, a captivating gift for speech, and an excellent memory. By now he had already passed through every stage of the monastic probation and was able and ready to take the monastic vows.5
Tonsure and Ordination
Prokhor is tonsured as a monk with the name Seraphim and soon ordained as a hierodeacon.
On August 13, 1786, with the permission of the Holy Synod, Fr.6 Pachomius tonsured the novice Prokhor into the rank of a monk. His sponsors at the tonsure were Fr.7 Joseph and Fr. Isaiah. At his consecration he was given the name Seraphim (the fiery one).8 On October 27, 1786, the monk Seraphim, at the petition of Fr.
Zealous Hierodeacon Service
Seraphim serves as hierodeacon with angelic zeal, spending nights in vigil and caring for the altar, granted strength by the Lord.
Pachomius was ordained a hierodeacon by His Grace Victor, Bishop of Vladimir and Murom. He gave himself wholly to his new service, which was truly already angelic. From the day he was ordained, he kept his soul and body pure, serving almost continuously for five years and nine months. He spent every night before Sundays and feast days in vigil and prayer, standing motionless until the Liturgy itself. And after every Divine service, remaining still longer in the church, he, in his duty as hierodeacon, put the sacred vessels in order and cared for the purity of the Lord's Altar. The Lord, seeing his zeal and diligence in ascetic labors, granted Fr. Seraphim strength and fortitude, so that he felt no weariness, needed no rest, often forgot about food and drink, and, lying down to sleep, regretted that a human being cannot, like the Angels, serve God without interruption.
The Journey to Diveyevo
Father Pachomius, deeply attached to Seraphim, takes him on a journey to the village of Lemet and stops at Diveyevo.
Father Superior Fr.9 Pachomius now grew even more attached in his heart than before to Fr. Without Fr. Seraphim, he almost never celebrated a single service. When he went out on monastery business or for ministry, alone or with other elders, he often took Fr. Seraphim. So, in 1789, in the first half of June, Fr. Pachomius with the treasurer Fr. Isaiah and the hierodeacon Fr.
Mother Alexandra's Final Hours
The elders administer Holy Unction to the dying Mother Alexandra, who gives them her last possessions for the Diveyevo community.
Seraphim set out by invitation to the village of Lemet, six versts from the present-day town of Ardatov in Nizhny Novgorod province, to the funeral of their wealthy benefactor, the landowner Alexander Solovtsov, and on the way they stopped in Diveyevo to visit the superior of the community, Agafia Semyonovna Melgunova, an elder highly revered by all and also their benefactress. Mother Alexandra was ill and, having received from the Lord notice of her approaching death, asked the ascetic fathers, for the sake of Christ's love, to administer Holy Unction to her.10 Fr. Pachomius at first proposed putting off the Holy Unction until they returned from Lemet, but the holy elder repeated her request and said that they would no longer find her alive on the way back. The great elders lovingly performed the Mystery of Holy Unction over her. Then, taking leave of them, Mother Alexandra gave Fr. Pachomius the last of what she had and had accumulated over the years of her ascetic life in Diveyevo.11
The Bequest and Prophecy
Mother Alexandra entrusts her funds and novices to Pachomius, who points to Seraphim as the one to fulfill the Queen of Heaven's promise.
According to the testimony that the young woman Evdokia Martynova, who lived with her, gave to her spiritual father, Archpriest Fr. Vasily Sadovsky, Matushka Agafya Semyonovna handed over to the builder Fr.12 Pachomius: a little bag of gold, a little bag of silver, and two sacks of copper, totaling forty thousand, asking him to give her sisters everything they needed in life, since they wouldn't know how to manage it themselves.13 Matushka Alexandra begged Fr. Pachomius to commemorate her at Sarov for the repose of her soul, not to leave or abandon her inexperienced novices, and also in due time to care for the monastery promised to her by the Queen of Heaven. To this the elder Fr. Pachomius replied: "Matushka!" I do not refuse to serve the Queen of Heaven, as far as my strength allows and according to your bequest, and to care for your novices; likewise, not only will I pray for you until my death, but our whole monastery will never forget your kindnesses—yet as for the rest, I cannot give you my word, for I am old and weak, and how am I to take that on when I don't know whether I'll live to see that time. But here's Hierodeacon Seraphim—you know his spirituality, and he's young—he'll live to see that time; entrust this great work to him."
