LXX. Magister quomodo loquatur

For the teacher should see how he holds the rod of correction, keeping his disciples in check with it in his hands. He must always be a harsh and severe whip, for if he allows them to go according to their own will for the sake of some benefit, they will become utterly rebellious and will even hand him over to death if they can. But to those who shine with a little light, he should speak gently, because if he tries to surround them with harshness, they will be completely extinguished and will become worse than before.

Nam magister videat quomodo virgam correptionis, discipulos suos coercendo, in manibus suis teneat. •) Ipse enim flagellum duris et asperis semper sit, quoniam si eos propter utilitatem alicujus utilitatis secundum voluntatem suam ire permiserit, omnino rebelles efficerentur, et eum etiam, si potuerint, morti tradent.

Ad illos autem qui cum parvo lumine lucent, cum lenitate loquatur, quia si eos cum acerbitate circumdare voluerit, omnino extinguentur, et pejores prioribus iient.
