LIV. De inanis gloriae poenis purgatoriis.

LIV. De inanis gloriae poenis purgatoriis.

And behold, I saw a long and wide swamp, full of filth, with many kinds of vermin in it, and it emitted a terrible stench, in which the souls of those were tormented who, while living in the world, had eagerly pursued empty glory. Since they sought to boast in vain, they were stained by the filth of that same swamp; and because they had also grown proud in that same vice, they were tormented by these worms; and because they acted indiscriminately everywhere, they were harmed by the stench mentioned.

Et ecce paludem longam et latam vidi, multam sordem, muUaque genera verraium in se habentem, ac pessimum foetorem de se emittentem, in quo animae illorum affligebantur, qui dum in saeculo viverent, maximo studio ad inanem gloriam anhelaverant.

Nam quia inaniter gloriari satagebant, sorde ejusdem paludis inficiebantur; et quia etiam in eodem vitio superbierant, a vermibus istis torquebantur; et quia sic ubique indiscreto fecerant, praedicto foetore laedebanlur.
