Contention is indeed a restless evil; it does not love peace, but flees from patience, and cannot endure injury. Instead, it seeks out litigious people and encourages them to quarrel, nor does it allow them to speak peacefully, for it is bold and quick to provoke, invading each person with contentious words. For those who love strife imitate the Devil, who wanted to obscure the beauty of the angelic goodness and show himself as more beautiful than they. Therefore, God cast him and those who follow him into endless confusion, where they will endure eternal disgrace, as inspired by me, David shows, saying:

Contentio enim inquietum malum est, nec concordiam amat, sed patientiam fugit, et injuriam non suffert, sed litigiosos homines quaerit, et eos ad lites exhortatur, nec ipsos pacifice loqui permittit, quia ad loquendum procax et prompta est, ac unumquemque contentiosis verbis invadit.
Nam homines qui lites diligunt, Diabolum imitantur, qui pulchritudinera bonorura angelorum obfuscare voluit, et se illis pulchriorem ostendere.
