LXXXXVII. Poena iracundorutn

And I saw a murky air like a burning fire, and beneath it a wide and dark pit, full of filthy putrefaction, in which there were worms, having a single eye on their face, and stirring that putrid mass with their tails. But the souls that had harbored anger along with hatred in this world, and had not ceased from it, were tormented in the same putrid filth and by its worms, and were burned by the fire of that same air. For they had continually harbored anger with a stubborn hatred within themselves, and so they were tormented by the filth and worms of that same pit, suffering from the filth because of their anger and from the worms because of their hatred. And since they had filled themselves with the same fury, they suffered the fire of the air they had provoked. About this. However, the souls that were without hatred and without the habit of anger, while they were in their bodies, were sometimes stirred to anger; they would leave their bodies and go around that same place, and they saw great punishments there and were afraid of them. But since anger had not taken root in them, they were not affected by the same punishments; rather, they saw them as a sudden anger and quickly escaped.
