Reordering the Outer Life

True conversion requires a complete restructuring of one's daily habits, senses, and social interactions to align with a new life in Christ.

What does it mean to hem in the sphere of sinful impulses? It also means rearranging the order of your outer life and your activities according to the spirit of the new life. When a person is given over to sin, every power of the soul and every function of the body works for that sin; and likewise, the pattern of home life and outward dealings is steeped in the same spirit.1 So now, if after conversion the sinner doesn't leave behind his former pursuits and his old way of life, they'll easily drag him back into the old ways. Everything has to be rebuilt, and a new order has to be brought in everywhere. So—the eye had grown used to looking at what fed sin, the ear to hearing what flattered the passions, and the other senses too were instruments of vicious inclinations. Now, on the contrary, they must be made instruments of righteousness.2 Let the eye look, instead of at bad pictures, at an image of the Last Judgment, or some sacred image.3 .4 . Let your ears listen to church music instead of seductive songs, and so on. There used to be friendly conversations, outings, and other things of that kind as well. . . All of that has to be left behind and replaced with other ways of relating to one another—for example, going to church, talking with people who live a spiritual life, and so on. There was a habit of going to bed and getting up at such-and-such times, and of keeping such-and-such a table, because the needs then were different.5 Now all of this needs a different time and a different substance. . . Before, people eagerly read such-and-such books.6 Now you need to set those aside and focus on the Word of God and the writings of the Fathers. . . You should examine all your actions and activities, making it a point to follow what the spirit of the new life demands.

The Necessity of Radical Change

Just as a bandage heals a wound, new spiritual disciplines are essential for recovery, as illustrated by the example of Saint Mary of Egypt.

Just as a bandage is to a wound, these new practices are for a soul wounded by sin and seeking healing. . . Anyone who sticks to old habits while hoping to be cleansed of their passions is only flattering themselves with a vain hope. Why didn't Mary of Egypt return to Egypt to settle in the deserts there, but instead went into the desert beyond the Jordan? Because before she could have reached the Egyptian desert, she would have had to meet again the old objects of her desire, and she would hardly have stood firm against the stirrings of sin that would have risen from them.7 . . That is how everyone must act. Once you've made a firm commitment to change your life, you must cast off everything from the past and establish new patterns and rules for yourself. By this, vicious inclinations and passions will be constrained, or put as if under a press.8

Notes

  1. 1 ↩«отправления тела» rendered as bodily functions/operations rather than mere activities.
  2. 2 ↩«правды» rendered as righteousness (moral/right relation), not bare factual truth; likely echoes Rom 6:13.
  3. 3 ↩«образ» can mean image or (Orthodox) icon; rendered as sacred image to keep both senses open.
  4. 4 ↩Source sentence is only a period; no translatable content in the supplied reading.
  5. 5 ↩стол держать may mean either the household table/meals or the broader style of board and living; rendered as 'keeping such-and-such a table' in the domestic sense.
  6. 6 ↩«такия и такия» is indefinite (this sort and that), not naming particular titles; rendered as 'such-and-such'.
  7. 7 ↩«прежними предметами» rendered as 'the old objects of her desire' (former occasions/objects of passion); the sense is the people, places, and sights that once enticed her, not mere physical objects.
  8. 8 ↩гнет can mean a mechanical press or heavy pressure/oppression; the 'как бы' ('as if') marks the image as metaphorical compression of the passions.
