The Illusion of Self-Reform
The author addresses why some people fail in their attempts at self-reform and feel abandoned by God.
You've written that some people start working on their own to cut off their vices, but they only keep at it for a while before giving up. This is a self-made reform, without the inner spirit of life (p.1 189). How can that be? Can there really be injustice with God?✦ Still, the person wanted it and worked hard. Why then is he left without support?»2
The Deceitfulness of the Heart
Using an anecdote from 1812, the author illustrates how outward piety can mask a heart that has not truly renounced its hidden desires.
Don't worry. The Lord doesn't wrong anyone. Even a cup of water isn't forgotten—much less great labor.3 Only let what is done be done for Him and offered to Him from the heart. But it often happens that something looks like God's work on the outside, while in essence it's something else entirely. How much cunning hides in the corrupted human will! And who can figure out all its twists and turns?4 I'll tell you about one incident that happened in Moscow in 1812, as it was told to me. There was in Moscow a devout man — a faster, a man of prayer, and a giver of alms. Everyone honored him and was certain of the strength of his virtue. But when the Russians left Moscow and, after the French entered it, all our order there fell apart and anyone could live as he pleased, this man, who had stayed in Moscow for some reason, gave himself over to drunkenness and an unclean life with a lack of restraint and shamelessness rarely seen even among habitual sinners. The Lord alone knows what this means! I'm not saying this to condemn the man—for the enemy has many snares and our weaknesses are great—but only to clarify the thought I want to offer you; here is what I think. It could be that in his heart he always had a craving for such things and never truly renounced them in his heart.5 The outward environment he lived in before kept him behaving in an orderly way. But when that barrier was gone, the dispositions that had been hiding in the heart came out into the open and showed themselves in matching deeds.
A Call to Interior Examination
The author urges the reader to examine the foundation of their own conduct to ensure it is rooted in grace rather than external circumstances.
There must be so many people like this in the world! For a while, everything is in good order, but then it all collapses and proves to be worth nothing. Why? Because everything was done for external reasons, and once those were removed, the actions themselves stopped. Only the Lord knows who lives with this kind of order. Let everyone examine themselves: isn't their orderly conduct built on just such a shaky foundation? But if someone has this kind of propriety and it later falls, what reproach does that cast on grace, when nothing here was done for the Lord—and what blame falls on the path of salvation, when that path wasn't even in view in any of this?
