The Synergy of Grace and Will
The Christian life is a collaborative work of divine grace and human freedom, where the focus should be on prayer rather than analytical dissection.
How can you tell the difference between the action of grace and your own desire to remain in the good? There's no need to distinguish between them, either. A truly Christian life is built by both together—by grace and by our own desire and freedom—so that grace won't do anything with us without the free inclination of the will, and our own desire can't succeed in anything without being strengthened by grace. Both meet in the single work of building a Christian life; it's hard to distinguish with fine precision what in any given work belongs to grace and what to our own desire—and there's no need to, either. Know this: grace never forces free will, and it never leaves it alone without help when that will is worthy of it, needs it, and asks for it. The Lord is near!✦ Pray!
Humility Over Curiosity
Instead of obsessing over the origins of our spiritual state, we should focus on the heart's disposition and rely on God's mercy.
There is a life without grace that looks like a life of grace. The difference between them lies in the heart's inner disposition and in moral strength. Which is which, only God's eye can tell.1 As for us, we must look to ourselves and cry out to the Lord with aching hearts: O Lord, save! O Lord, prosper us!2 .3 .4 It's better to drive away idle curiosity.

Scripture echoes
- ↩Phil.4.5 — Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
Notes
- 1 ↩«Та или другая» picks up the prior contrast between a truly grace-filled life and a graceless life that only resembles it; rendered as “which is which” for natural English while keeping the binary force.
- 2 ↩«Благопоспеши» is the psalmic petition for divine help/success (not secular prosperity). Solemn direct address keeps uncontracted forms.

Letters on the Christian Life companion
Rule yourself daily, not just on retreat
Chosen Portion turns the mirror into a daily practice — a short reading and examining question each morning before you lead anyone.
Chosen Portion makes the mirror daily: the ruler-formation questions this collection preserves become a two-minute morning examination in the app.
- A daily formation reading drawn from centuries of counsel to those in authority
- One pointed examination question a day — two minutes, before the meetings start
- Track your practice over weeks and watch the examined life become a habit
