Chapter 5PazmanyImadsagos.1.5

Isteni félelemért

The Beginning of Wisdom

The soul begs God to plant holy fear as the beginning of wisdom, since even the angels and stars are not pure before His judgment.

True and holy God, I ask you: pour into my heart the beginning of true wisdom, the foundation of a perfect life, and the strong protection of every good deed—your holy fear—so that, recognizing my wickedness and your marvelous, true judgments, I may tremble in all my actions, fear your anger as waves over my head, knowing that you do not leave wickedness unpunished. Lord God, before whom even the stars are not pure, and even in your angels you find fault—who wouldn't tremble before you, seeing your harsh punishments against sinners, the daily failures of those dedicated to serving you, and the countless traps of this world and the devil, with which they relentlessly assault human frailty?✦✦

Learning to Fear God Alone

The prayer turns from worldly dread to the pure fear of God, asking to love Him for goodness and to fear His judgment, knowing even the just are scarcely saved.

Lord, take from my heart every worldly fear, so that I may not dread those who can harm only the body, but may dread You, who can kill me in body and soul. Let me love You, Lord, for Your boundless goodness; let me fear You for Your exalted majesty and for my countless sins, of which I must give account before Your just judgment seat in the sight of the heavenly hosts. If, then, even the righteous is scarcely saved in Your judgment, where will the sinner go, and what will become of him?1

Plea for Mercy Under Holy Fear

Under the guardian fear of God, the soul prays not to be judged in wrath, asks for healing and deliverance, and closes with hope, doxology, and Amen.

Let the fear of you be a strong guardian over my soul and my senses, my God, so that I may keep away not only from sin, but also from the company and the means that lead to sin. Lord, do not chastise me in your anger; do not enter into judgment with your servant, for before you no one is justified without your mercy, and no one is cleansed from their sins. Heal me therefore, Lord God, and I will be healed; deliver me, and I will be delivered. For you are my hope. Who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

Conclusion: Fear and Love in God's Providence

The chapter concludes by asking God to pour both fear and love of His holy name into our hearts, trusting His fatherly providence through Christ.

Pour the fear and the love of your holy name into our hearts, Lord God; for your fatherly providence never abandons those whom you have built on the strength of your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Amen.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Job.25.5 — Behold, even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in his sight—
  2. ↩Job.4.18 — Behold, he puts no trust in his servants, and in his angels he finds fault.

Notes

  1. 1 ↩Archaic 'medgyen, s hová légyen' is a doubled rhetorical question (where shall he go / where shall he be). Rendered as 'where will the sinner go, and what will become of him?' to keep the force without archaic diction.
