A kétségbeesés ellen
A kétségbeesés ellen
I know and confess, Lord God, that I have broken your laws countless times and defiled my life with many wicked deeds—and for that my heart fears and trembles. But you, Father of mercy — mercy is your own, and it surpasses all your works — who welcome the sinful person whenever he turns back, and do not remember his wickedness: welcome your prodigal children. I have sinned, Father, against heaven and against you. If you keep account of my wickedness, I cannot escape. But Lord, do not stir up your anger against a withered leaf, and do not show your power against the dust — but your mercy.1 Do not look at my sins, but look to the face of Christ raised on the cross, and to his abundant redemption — for though only one drop of his blood was enough to redeem the whole world, still, to encourage his sinful children, he poured out for us his precious, holy blood to the last drop. Lord, your merciful kindness is greater than my wickedness; the cry of righteous Abel's blood is more powerful than my iniquities. So trust in God, my soul; look at the abundant treasure of your salvation, which your Savior offered to God for your sake. If you laid my sins on your holy Son's shoulders, my God, and in him scourged all our iniquities, do not punish my wicked life again; but, having given us your holy Son, pour out your mercy on us together with him. I have often offended you deeply; but you, Father of mercies — have you not placed my burden on your holy Son's shoulders? Have you not healed my spiritual diseases with the bleeding bruises of his holy body?2 You showed such great goodness, Lord, that when we could not make satisfaction for our sins, you gave your own Son for us — so that his humility might heal our pride, his agony might make satisfaction for our bodily pleasures, and his obedient gentleness might cleanse our angry disobedience.3 Why, then, should I fall into despair? Why should I not trust in my Redeemer's boundless merit, and in your great love? If you asked for mercy for your murderers on the cross; if you so readily received Saint Peter, who denied you, and the thief who pleaded on the cross: your mercy has not changed, even now. And since through gracious promises you call to yourself those burdened with sin and promise them relief, I too, your poor sinful servant, take refuge in you, my hope like a strong iron anchor; I cling to you as to a strong rock.4 If you have never before rejected those who trust in you; if no one who placed their hope in you was ever put to shame: do not reject my poor self either.5 My Father, you who created me to see your face and planted me in Christ through the true faith: do not allow me to perish because of my sins, or let the shedding of your holy Son's blood be wasted in me. Encourage my heart, and say to it: I am your salvation; whoever trusts in me will not be lost.✦✦ Let the precious merit of your holy blood, your saving name of Jesus, and your living love for us kindle true hope in me: that in you—who are both my judge and my merciful advocate and protector—I may trust steadfastly with my whole heart in all my troubles.✦✦6 You who live and reign. Amen.

Amen.

Notes
- 1 ↩Hungarian closes elliptically with 'hanem irgalmasságodat' (but your mercy), parallel to the withheld showing of power; English keeps the ellipsis rather than inventing an extra verb.
- 2 ↩Old Hungarian kéki means bruise/welt (from scourging), not 'blue' in the modern color sense; rendered as 'bruises' to keep the Passion image.
- 3 ↩eleget tenni is rendered 'make satisfaction' to keep the satisfaction/atonement force rather than a vague 'do enough'.
- 4 ↩vasmacska is an iron grapnel/anchor; rendered 'iron anchor' to keep the concrete nautical image of hope holding fast.
- 5 ↩szegény fejemet is a humble Hungarian self-reference ('my poor head'); rendered 'my poor self' to keep the tone without a calque.
- 6 ↩ítélő bírám rendered as 'my judge' (lit. 'my judging judge'); the doubled form stresses Christ's judicial role without archaic 'judge who judgest'.
