Rabokért

Acknowledging God's Sovereignty for Captives

The prayer opens by recognizing that no one can resist God's will, then implores Him to look upon innocent captives as He did Israel in Egypt.

Lord and Creator of heaven and earth, no one can resist your will or undo the counsel you have determined. We ask you, out of your boundless goodness, to look upon your wretched poor ones who are held innocently in the pagans' dungeons and cry out to you under harsh bondage, just as the people of Israel once suffered in Egyptian slavery.✦1

Petition for Joyful Endurance and Deliverance

The prayer asks God to fill the captives with joy to bear their suffering peacefully, and to break their chains so that pagan nations may know God as the true Liberator.

Lord God, through your Holy Spirit, fill their hearts with joy, so that for your name's sake they may peacefully bear the blow that has been laid upon them; and according to your infinite power and wisdom, grant them a way to be delivered. Hear, Lord, the cries of those bound in irons; release their bonds and give them back their freedom, so that they may joyfully praise your holy name, and so that the pagan nations may know that you alone are the God who sets free.

Trust in God's Will and Christ's Redemption

If God still chooses to discipline, the prayer asks for comfort, protection from the devil, and perseverance in faith, ending with a declaration of Christ's deliverance and an amen.

But if Your Majesty still chooses to chastise the sinful children further, comfort them in their afflictions, lighten their yoke, guard their souls from the devil's bondage, and keep them in the true faith, so that neither worldly afflictions and wants, nor the enticements of the pagans, nor the devil's deceit may harm them.✦ Through your beloved, holy Son, who set us free from the devil's bondage.✦ Amen.

Amen.

Scripture echoes

  1. ↩Exod.2.23-Exod.2.25 — And it came to pass in those many days that the king of Egypt died, and the sons of Israel groaned from the slavery, and they cried out, and their cry for help went up to God from the slavery. Exod.2.24 — And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. Exod.2.25 — And God saw the children of Israel, and God knew.
  2. ↩Heb.12.5-Heb.12.6;Prov.3.11-Prov.3.12 — And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose heart when you are reproved by him;" Heb.12.6 — For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he scourges every son whom he receives. Prov.3.11 — My son, do not despise the discipline of the LORD, and do not resent his rebuke. Prov.3.12 — For the LORD reproves the one he loves, as a father delights in his son.
  3. ↩Col.1.13;Heb.2.14-Heb.2.15 — He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves. Heb.2.14 — Since, therefore, the children have shared in blood and flesh, he himself also in like manner partook of the same, so that through death he might destroy the one having the power of death, that is, the devil, Heb.2.15 — and free those who, through fear of death, were subject to slavery all their lives

Notes

  1. 1 ↩«szolgálat» here means forced labor/servitude (bondage), not free worship or ministry; rendered 'hard bondage' to match the prison and Egyptian-slavery context.
