The Necessity of the Cross
Christ's death and burial were essential to satisfy God's justice and confirm the reality of his sacrifice.
Why did Christ have to die? Because of God's justice and truth, our sin couldn't be paid for in any other way than by the death of the Son of God. Why was he buried? This confirms that he truly died.
The Meaning of Our Death
The believer's death is transformed from a penalty for sin into an entrance into eternal life.
Why must we still die, even though Christ has died for us? Our death isn't a payment for our sin, but simply a dying to sin and an entrance into eternal life.
The Power of Christ's Sacrifice
Christ's death empowers the believer to put away the old self and live in gratitude.
What further benefit do we gain from the sacrifice and death of Christ on the cross? Through the power of Christ, our old self is crucified, killed, and buried with him, so that sin no longer rules over us, but we offer ourselves to him as a living sacrifice of thanks.
Deliverance from Anguish
Christ's descent into hell assures the believer of deliverance from all fear and torment.
Why did he descend into hell? This assures me that even in my greatest trials, I can be certain that my Lord Christ has delivered me from hellish fear and torment, because he himself suffered unspeakable anguish, pain, and terror in his soul on the cross and even before that.

Warum hat Christus den Tod erleiden müssen? Um der Gerechtigkeit und Wahrheit Gottes willen konnte für unsere Sünde nicht anders bezahlt werden als durch den Tod des Sohnes Gottes.
Warum ist er begraben worden? Damit wird bezeugt, dass er wirklich gestorben ist.
Warum müssen wir noch sterben, obwohl Christus für uns gestorben ist? Unser Tod ist nicht eine Bezahlung für unsere Sünde, sondern nur ein Absterben der Sünden und Eingang zum ewigen Leben.
Welchen weiteren Nutzen haben wir aus Opfer und Tod Christi am Kreuz? Durch die Kraft Christi wird unser alter Mensch mit ihm gekreuzigt, getötet und begraben, damit die Sünde uns nicht mehr beherrscht, sondern wir uns ihm zu einem lebendigen Dankopfer hingeben.
Warum folgt»abgestiegen zu der Hölle«? Damit wird mir zugesagt, dass ich selbst in meinen schwersten Anfechtungen gewiss sein darf, dass mein Herr Christus mich von der höllischen Angst und Pein erlöst hat, weil er auch an seiner Seele unaussprechliche Angst, Schmerzen und Schrecken am Kreuz und schon zuvor erlitten hat.
