The Domestic Sanctuary
The household should be ordered as a place of prayer, where holy icons are kept with reverence, cleanliness, and devotion.
In their own homes, every Christian should place holy and honorable images—painted on icons in their proper likeness—on the walls of every room, arranging them beautifully with adornments and lampstands. In those lampstands, candles should be lit before the holy images whenever God is praised; after the singing, they should be extinguished, and the images covered with a curtain to ensure complete cleanliness and to protect them from dust, maintaining good order and careful keeping. Always dust them with a clean feather, wipe them with a soft sponge, and keep the room clean at all times. Only those who are worthy, with a pure conscience, should touch the holy images; and during the praise of God, holy singing, and prayer, light candles and burn fragrant frankincense and incense. Set up the holy images of those who have been sacredly honored from the beginning in their proper order under their established names; in prayers, vigils, and prostrations, and in every praise of God, always honor them with tears and weeping, and with a contrite heart, confess and ask for the forgiveness of sins.12

В дому своем всякому християнину во всякои храмине святыя и честныя образы написаны на иконах по существу ставити на стенах устроив благолепно со всяким украшением и со светилники, в них же свещи пред святыми образы возжигаются на всяком славословии Божии, и по пении погашают завесою закрываются всякия ради чистоты, и от пыли благочиния ради и брежения, а всегда чистым крылышком ометати, и мяхкою губою вытирати их и храм тот чист держати всегда а к святым образом касатися достоиным в чистеи совести и на словословии Божии, и на святом пении, и молитв свечи вжигати, и кадити благовонным ладоном и фимияном, а образы святыя поставляются, иже в начале по чину свято почитаеми суть имяны прежереченными, в молитвах и во бдениих и в поклонех, и во всяком славословии Божии всегда почитати их со слезами и с рыданием и сокрушеным сердцем исповедатися, просяще отпущения грехом.
