The Foundation of Orthodox Faith

The chapter outlines the essential tenets of the Orthodox faith, including the Trinity, the Incarnation, and the proper veneration of holy images and relics.

So every Christian needs to know how to live according to God in the Orthodox Christian faith: first of all, believe with all your soul in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the undivided Trinity; believe in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God; call the Mother who bore Him the Mother of God; and with faith bow down before Christ's Cross, for on it the Lord worked salvation for every human being.✦✦ And for that reason, render honor also to the icon of Christ and of His Most Pure Mother, and to the holy heavenly bodiless powers, and to all the saints, as to Love itself.✦12 Pray in this way, make your prostrations, and call on them for help before God; and with faith, kiss the relics of the saints and bow down before them.3

Подобает убо всякому християнину ведати како по Бозе жити в православнои вере християньстеи первое убо от всея души веровати во Отца и Сына и Святаго Духа в неразделную Троицу и воплощению Господа нашего Исуса Христа Сына Божия веруи и рождьшую Его Матерь Богородицу нарицаи Кресту же Христову с верою покланяися яко на том всем человеком спасение содела Господь. И понеж иконе же Христове и Пречистои Матере Его и святым Небесным бесплотным силам и всем святым честь воздаи яко сам любовь. В молитве си глаголи, и поклоняние твори, и на помощь к Богу призываи их, мощи же святых с верою целуи и покланяися им.

  1. 1 ↩«яко сам любовь» is elliptical. Rendered as «as to Love itself» (honor ending in divine Love / God who is love). Could also be read as «as Love itself requires» or «as to Love Himself».
  2. 2 ↩«понеж» is taken as abbreviated понеже («since / for that reason»), linking icon and saint honor to the faith just confessed; if a different witness is intended, the connective may need revision.
  3. 3 ↩«си» rendered as «this way / these things», pointing back to the confessional content of the chapter; not a fixed written prayer text.
