True fruitfulness comes from hidden virtue and right intention, not merely outward displays of good works.
It bears fruit through virtue. The fruit of a good work is the hidden virtue of a right intention. Under the flower of a good work, which shines outwardly through example, there lies hidden within the mind, as it were, a kind of secret fruit of virtue. So whoever shows forth a good work outwardly in the eyes of others while empty of virtue is like a tree that blossoms without fruit.

Per virtutem fructificat. Fructus boni operis est virtus occulta rectae intentionis. Sub flore enim boni operis, quod foris per exemplum lucet, quasi quidam intus in mente absconditus fructus virtutis latet. Proinde quisquis vacuus a virtute bonum opus in oculis hominum foris exhibet, velut arbor est, quae sine fructu floret.
