A flower has three things: hope, beauty, and fragrance — all of which we find reflected in a good work. For just as the fruit to come is promised in the flower, so the reward of future recompense is awaited in a good work.
Charity Toward Others' Works
Seeing good works in others inspires hope that they share in heavenly recompense.
And when we discern good works in others, we hope that they belong to the lot of heavenly recompense.
Example and Good Report
A good work shines through example to those present and soothes those absent through a good reputation.
Likewise, just as a flower shines through its beauty and soothes through its fragrance, so a good work shines indeed through example — when it appears praiseworthy to those who are present — and kindles them to imitation. But through its fragrance it soothes even those who are absent and far away, when it becomes known through the good report of a good reputation.

Per disciplinam floret. In flore tria sunt: spes, species, odor, quae omnia per similitudinem in bono opere invenimus. Sicut enim in flore futurus fructus promittitur, ita in bono opere futurae retributionis praemium exspectatur. Et eos, in quibus bona opera cernimus, ad sortem supernae retributionis pertinere speramus. Item sicut flos per speciem fulget et per odorem demulcet, ita bonum opus per exemplum quidem fulget, quando praesentibus laudabile apparet, eosque ad imitationem accendit.
