During a prolonged papal vacancy, Louis of Bavaria and Frederick of Austria were elected in discord as rival kings of the Romans, leading to years of war until Louis captured Frederick and eventually a reconciliation was reached.

This discord between them lasted until 1322, the seventh year of the Lord, when on the eve of Michaelmas Louis, duke of Bavaria, after many wars had been waged between them, captured Frederick, duke of Austria, in battle and, having taken him prisoner, detained him for 11 years. From then on an agreement was made between them.
