Chapter 81ChrP.5.81

De tribus radiis. solis et scissura collegii.

The Triple Sun and Its Omen

Three suns appear in the sky, a prodigy foretelling the pope's death and a schism in the college of cardinals.

Three suns appeared around the eighth hour: one in the East, unnatural; two in the south, one natural, the other against the course of nature, and they lasted a long time, and each was emitting its own rays. This was a certain sign and prodigy, signifying the death of the pope and, after his death, a small split in the college. This split, however, lasted through two years, and— —months before the cardinals agreed on the election of the future pope.

Historical Parallel with Caesar's Death

The same sign appeared at Julius Caesar's death, followed by a split in the senate, as recorded by Comestor and Ptolemy.

This same sign appeared in a similar way at the time of the death of Julius Caesar, as Comestor writes, and after his death a split in the senate occurred. (Ptol. p. .)

The Death of Pope Clement

Pope Clement dies on the kalends of May, the same day a comet begins to appear.

On the death of the pope. In that same year — on the first of May, the year having run its course — Pope Clement died on the very day the comet began to appear. (Ptol. P. .)

(Ptol. p. .)

im De morte pape. Eodem anno ximk kalendas Maji moritur papa Clemens eo die, revoluto anno, quo cometa incepit aparere. (Ptol. P. .)
