Burgardus's Troubling Departure
Brother Burgardus, ninth master general of the Teutonic Order, abandoned his habit and transferred to the Hospitallers instead of defending the Holy Land, leaving the chronicler to question the spirit behind his decision.
Brother Burgardus of Swanden, the ninth master general of the Teutonic Order, presided at this time. This man, led I know not by what spirit, when he ought to have crossed over for the defense of the Holy Land, sought and obtained permission, laid aside the habit of the Teutonic Order, and took up the order of the Hospitallers, in which he afterwards died.

Hic nescio quo ductus spiritu dum ad terre sancte defensionem debuit transirec, petita licencia et obtenta habitum ordinis Theutonice deposuit et ordinem Hospitalariorumd assumpsit, in quo postea est defunctus.
