Chronicon Terrae Prussiae (Chronicle of the Prussian Land)/Book 4 · Tercia pars: De bellis fratrum domus Theutonice contra Pruthenos
Chapter 51ChrP.4.51

De resignacione pacis et vastacione terre Cuyavie.

Swantepolcus Breaks Faith and Devastates Cuyavia

Swantepolcus repays the brothers' kindness with treachery, secretly attacking their men and then openly renouncing peace to invade and lay waste to Cuyavia with fire, slaughter, and plunder.

After a short while, Swantepolcus was once again ungrateful for the kindness and abundant grace the brothers had often shown him when he was in desperate need. He secretly robbed the brothers' men, killed some, took others captive, and harassed them in various ways.12 At last, openly renouncing the peace, he began to persecute the Christians with hostility, just as before. Having gathered a strong army, he suddenly entered Cuyavia, the land of Duke Casimir, and laid it waste with fire and plunder. After killing many Christians, he led away the women and children along with a great deal of other booty.34

Elapso modico temporis spacioa Swantepolcus iterum ingratus beneficio et multipharie gracie, quam eidem in summa necessitate constituto, fratres sepius exhibuerant, occulte homines fratrum spoliavit, quosdam occidit, alios captivavitb et modis variis perturbavit. Tandem resignans publice pacem, incepit Cri stianos hostiliter persequi, sicut prius, et congregato exercitu valido, Cuyaviam terram ducis Casimiri intravit improvise, et vastavit eam incendio et rapina, et occisis multis Cristianis, mulieres et parvulos cum aliarum rerum magno spolio secum duxit.

Notes

  1. 1spacioa: likely scribal variant of spatium; rendered as 'interval' to match the sense of modico temporis spacio ('a small space of time').
  2. 2multipharie: rare/medieval adverb, rendered as 'manifold' to convey the sense of grace shown in many ways.
  3. 3Cri stianos: split across a line break in the source; normalized and rendered as 'Christians'.
  4. 4cum (token 34): read as a preposition with the ablative expressing accompaniment ('along with') rather than as a temporal or causal conjunction.
