Chapter 289ChrP.4.289

De adventu peregrinorum.

The Arrival of the Pilgrims in Prussia

In 1229, Counts John and Peter of Spanheim, Lord Peter of Rosenberg, and other nobles from the Rhine and Alsace arrived in Prussia with many knights and squires, but the campaign against the enemies of the faith was thwarted by the thinness of the ice.

In the year of the Lord 1329, Lord John and Philip, counts of Spanheim, and Lord Peter of Rosenberg from Bohemia, and his uncle Hermann, came to Prussia with many knights and squires, and many other nobles from the Rhine and Alsace; yet nothing could be done against the enemies of the faith on account of the thinness of the ice.1 %2

Read the original Latin

Notes

  1. 1The numeral 'Mcccxxnna' is uncertain; possibly 1329 but the reading is unclear. 'Tarnen' is likely a scribal variant of 'tamen' (nevertheless). 'Teneritudinem' is a rare form; the sense here is likely 'thinness' (of ice) rather than 'tenderness.'
  2. 2The source text contains only '%', which appears to be a scribal marker, section break, or placeholder rather than translatable content. Rendered as-is.
