De ave Maria.
Consolation through Mary in Tribulation
Amid severe tribulation, the brothers are commanded to seek Mary's intercession through the Hail, Queen and Hail, Mary after each hour.
At this time the brothers were crushed by many tribulations. And Brother Syfridus, the master, decreed that after each hour the clerical brothers should say the antiphon Hail, Queen, with the verse In every tribulation, and the collect Protect, O Lord, and the lay brothers should say one Hail, Mary, for the reverence of the blessed Virgin, so that through her intercession the aforementioned disturbance could in some way be mitigated.
