Chronicon Terrae Prussiae (Chronicle of the Prussian Land)/Book 4 · Tercia pars: De bellis fratrum domus Theutonice contra Pruthenos
Chapter 20ChrP.4.20

De adventu ducis dek Brunswick.

The Duke of Brunswick Comes to Prussia

Duke Otto of Brunswick arrives in Prussia with many pilgrims to aid the Teutonic brothers in their time of great need.

At this time—like cold water to someone who is thirsty, or good news from a distant land—that noble man Otto came to the land of Prussia: a man devoted to God, an illustrious prince and duke of Brunswick, also called duke of Lüneburg, arriving with a great multitude of pilgrims to support the brothers in their moment of grave necessity.12

Scripture echoes

  1. Prov.25.25Cold water on a weary soul, and good news from a distant land.

Notes

  1. 1The similes 'cold water to one who thirsts' and 'good news from a distant land' echo biblical language (cf. Proverbs 25:25, 'As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country'), but the passage is narrative rather than directly scriptural.
  2. 2The form 'sicienti' (token 5) is rare and morphologically uncertain; translated as 'to someone who is thirsty' based on the most plausible intended sense.
