Chapter 19ChrP.4.19

De edificacione castri Partegal et propugnaculi Scrandonis.

The Gobotini Build Strongholds Against the Brothers

The powerful Gobotini, hostile to the Teutonic brothers, build two fortifications—Partegal and Scrandonis—and garrison them with armed men.

In the land of Warmia there were certain very powerful men, called the Gobotini, who were deeply hostile to the brothers. Having gathered a crowd of fighters, they built one castle called Partegal in a field of that name, and another fortress on Mount Scrandonis, fortifying both with various armed men.

Daily Raids from Balga

The Gobotini launch daily attacks from Balga, terrorizing the brothers so that none dare venture outside their castle walls.

These men attacked the brothers from Balga daily, so that no one outside the castle dared to show themselves at all.

The Brothers Raise Snickenbergk

The Teutonic brothers construct the castle Snickenbergk on a mound before the marsh-guarded bridge near Balga, garrisoning it with brothers and the noble Hertwig to block the infidels' passage.

On the building of the castle Snickenbergk. The field in which the castle of Balga is situated is surrounded by marshes, so that in summer no one can cross except by a bridge. Before that bridge, on a certain mound, the brothers built a castle called Snickenbergk, placing in it several brothers and a certain noble man, Hertwig, the father of Hertwig of Pokarwis, and many other warlike men, who blocked the entrance against the infidels.
