Chapter 177ChrP.4.177

De expugnacione castri Kymenovie, et conversione mille et sexcentorum.

The Master's Burden for the Sudowians

Brother Conrad the Master, burdened with concern for the unconverted Sudowians, gathers a military company to bring them to the faith.

Of the Sudowians. Around this same time, Brother Conrad the Master, anxious about the duty laid upon him, spent many sleepless nights thinking about how he might lead the enemies of the faith, the Sudowians, to the way of truth. To accomplish this, a large company of brothers and other warriors was gathered.

The Unexpected Harvest of Captives

Brother Lodewicus meets the army with 1,600 converted Sudowian captives, prompting the Master to rejoice and redirect the campaign toward Sambia.

While they were on the road toward Sudowia, Brother Lodewicus of Libencele met them, bringing with him Cantegerdam, who had held Conrad captive, along with one thousand six hundred people from Sudowia of both sexes, whom he had converted to the faith of Christ while they were in captivity. When the Master saw these things he rejoiced, and ordered them to proceed toward the land of Sambia.

The Fall of Kymenovia and the Garrison's Flight

The Master besieges and captures the castle of Kymenovia on condition of the garrison's conversion, ravages the territory, only to discover the garrison has killed their leader and fled toward Lethowia.

After this, the following day the Master invaded the territory of Sudowia called Kymenowb with his army, and attacked the castle of the same name so fiercely that the garrison surrendered it on the condition that they could leave unharmed in their persons and possessions, promising that they would accept the faith of Christ. Then, a day being given, the territory of Kymenowb mentioned above was ravaged. While the brothers were returning with their army, it was discovered that the garrison of Kymenovia mentioned above, having killed their leader, had departed by another road toward the land of Lethowia.

Rebirth in the Font of Baptism

Brother Lodewicus leads the converted captives into Sambia, where all are baptized.

But Brother Lode Wicus moved on toward the land of Sambia with his own retinue, where all of them were reborn in the font of baptism.

Hoc facto sequenti die magister cum exercitu suo inlravit territorium Sudowie dictum Kymenowb, et castrum ejusdem nominis tarn acriter impugnavit, quousque castrenses ipsum sub hiis pactis, ut scilicet salvis rebus et personis exirent, tradiderunt, promittentes se fidem Cristi accepturos.
