A New Fortress Against Hidden Dangers
Brother Conrad, the master, foreseeing that Lithuanian raiders could exploit the hidden waterway of Neria to strike Sambia unawares, wisely ordered the construction of a new castle called Finnuni — the New House — on the Neria above the salt sea shore, to guard the land and the brothers against surprise attacks.
Of Courland. Brother Conrad, the master, as a wise and provident man, considering that through Neria — a route that was certainly hidden — unavenged harms and dangers could arise for the brothers and for the land of Sambia from the infidels, caused a castle to be built in Clicta on the Neria above the shore of the salt sea, called Finnuni, which is known as the New House, so that the Lithuanian raiders would not from now on enter Sambia unexpectedly.
