Chapter 172ChrP.4.172

De vastacione territorii Sudowie dicti Siliec et secunda captivitate fratri.

The Marshal's Campaign into Sudowie

While the master was away at chapter, Marshal Conradus led a vast army into the Sudowie territory of Siliam, burning all its buildings, slaying the captain Wadole and many others, and carrying off immense plunder.

Lodewicus. At the time when Brother Manegoldus, the master, had been summoned to the chapter and was on his journey, Brother Conradus of Tirbergk, the marshal, entered the territory of Sudowie called Siliam with many brothers and a very large army. So large was this army that it covered a space of many leagues. There they reduced all the buildings of that territory to ashes, killing a certain nobleman called Wadole who was captain there, and many others, and they carried off plunder beyond measure.

The Wounding and Miraculous Recovery of Brother Lodewicus

Brother Lodewicus was left for dead in the snow from grievous wounds, but when the Sudowites dragged him roughly on a horse, the forced-out blood restored him to health in what he believed was a healing.

In this campaign Brother Lodewicus of Libencele was struck with many wounds so severe that he was left for dead, half-alive, in the snow. When the Sudowites later found him placed on a horse — his head and arms hanging down on one side and his legs on the other — they dragged him along so clumsily that the blood, which had already clotted inside his body from his wounds, was violently forced out again, and by this he was, as he truly believed, healed.

The Second Captivity of Brother Lodewicus

Brother Lodewicus was captured a second time and handed into the custody of the nobleman Cantegerde.

This Brother Lodewicus was captured a second time and presented to a certain nobleman called Cantegerde, and was placed in his custody.

Lodewici. Eo tempore, quo frater Manegoldus magister vocatusd ad capitulum esset in itinere constitutus, frater Conradus de Tirbergk marscalcus cum multis fra tribus et maximo exercitu intravit Sudowie territorium dictum Siliam. Tarn copiosus fuit iste exercitus, quod multarum spacium leucarum occupavit. Ubi omnia edificia dicti territorii redegerunt in favillam, occidentes quendam nobilem dictum Wadole capitaneum ibidem et plures alios, predam inestimabilem deduxerunt.
