Chronicon Terrae Prussiae (Chronicle of the Prussian Land)/Book 4 · Tercia pars: De bellis fratrum domus Theutonice contra Pruthenos
Chapter 116ChrP.4.116

De occisione in fratrum et XL virorum.

The Ambush at Balga

Two Pruthenian nobles attack Balga, a skirmish ensues in thick fog, and an ambush kills three brothers and forty men.

Not long afterward, two powerful and noble Pruthenians, Scumob and Stuczec, came before Balga with a great army. The brothers, meeting them with their own men, killed two Pruthenian nobles. On that day there was such a thick fog that no one could see another person at a distance. As a result, when the brothers wanted to attack the retreating Pruthenians—because the middle part of their army had crossed through a marsh—those who were lying in ambush broke out and killed three brothers along with forty men.

Non longe postea duo nobiles et potentes Scumob et Stuczec cum magno exercitu venerunt ante Balgam. Fratres cum suis occurrentes eis, duos Pruthenos nobiles occiderunt. Hac die fuit tanta nebula, quod nullus alium a longe videre potuit. Unde factum fuit, quod dum fratres Pruthenos recedentes vellent invadere, quia media pars exercitus ipsorum transivit paludem, illi, qui in insidiis latitabant, eruperunt, et tres fratres cum xl viris interfecerunt.
