A Child’s Prayer for Parents
The child asks God to bless and protect their parents while seeking the grace to honor and care for them faithfully.
O kind God, heavenly Father, you who have commanded me always to honor my earthly father and mother—you who also graciously take pleasure, for the sake of your dear Son Jesus Christ, in such service and obedience, and who will reward it with long life and every kind of well-being and blessing—I ask you from the bottom of my heart: please let my dear parents, and all who stand in their place, live a long time, and keep and protect them from every kind of sickness, from all evil and harm. Give me also an understanding and obedient heart, so that I may obey them and all who have authority over me in fitting submission, honor them in deed, in words, and with patience, so that their blessing may come upon me. Help me so that I may in turn care for my father in his old age and not grieve him as long as he lives, but bear with him kindly even if he becomes childish, and never despise him even if I were gifted with more talents and more capable than he.1 Likewise, that I may never grieve or abandon my dear mother, who carried me under her heart with great pain and raised me with much hardship, so that her curse may not fall upon me.
Repentance and the Example of Christ
The child seeks forgiveness for past disobedience and asks for the grace to follow the example of the young Jesus in obedience.
I also ask you, good God: where I have until now been disobedient or set against my dear parents, please forgive me for the sake of your mercy.2 Do not hold the sins and wrongdoings of my youth against me. Do not remember my trespass and ignorance; but let me recognize my folly and feel sorrow and grief over it, turn to you with true faith and a repentant heart, and diligently take to heart the example of my Savior Jesus Christ, who in his youth—as a godly pattern for all children—was subject to his parents.3 So help me, that I may always be found in Christian obedience.
A Prayer for Protection and Growth
The child prays for discernment to avoid bad company and for spiritual and physical growth in the likeness of Christ.
O merciful God, keep me from godless company and frivolous people—that I may not fall in among them, and when they try to lure me, that I still hold my steps back and do not walk their path to ruin. Let me grow so that I increase in wisdom, age, and grace with you, my God, and with all people, through that same Son of yours, our Lord Jesus Christ.✦4 Amen.

O gütiger Gott, himmlischer Vater, der du mir geboten hast, meinen leiblichen Vater und Mutter allzeit zu ehren, lässest dir auch solchen Dienst und Gehorsam, um deines lieben Sohnes Jesu Christi willen, gnädig gefallen, und willst solches mit langem Leben und allerlei Wohlfahrt und Segen belohnen, ich bitte dich aus Grund meines Herzens, du wollest mir meine lieben Eltern und alle, so an ihrer Statt sind, lange Zeit lassen leben, sie behüten und bewahren vor allerlei Krankheiten, vor allem Übel und Schaden. Gib mir auch ein verständiges und gehorsames Herz, dass ich ihnen und allen, so über mich zu gebieten haben, in gebührlicher Untertänigkeit gehorche, sie ehre mit der Tat, mit Worten und mit Geduld, auf dass ihr Segen über mich komme. Gedenke nicht meiner Übertretung und Unwissenheit; lass mich aber meine Torheit erkennen und darüber Reue und Leid tragen, mich mit wahrem Glauben und bußfertigem Herzen zu dir bekehren und das Exempel meines Heilandes Jesu Christi fleißig einbilden, welcher in seiner Jugend, allen Kindern zu einem gottseligen Vorbild, seinen Eltern untertan war. Also hilf mir auch, dass ich in christlichem Gehorsam erfunden werde allezeit.
O barmherziger Gott, behüte mich vor gottloser Gesellschaft und leichtfertigen Leuten; dass ich nicht unter sie gerate, und wo sie mich locken, dass ich doch meinem Fuß wehre und ihren Weg nicht wandle zum Verderben. Lass mich aufwachsen, dass ich zunehme an Weisheit, Alter und Gnade bei dir, meinem Gott, und allen Menschen, durch denselben deinen Sohn, unsern Herrn Jesum Christum. Amen.
